Try changing the language to Japanese before selecting your character. It's just an error that freezes the game with English.

Thanks, is there any way to improve the sound quality? (it's choppy as hell) Also, is the game play supposed to be really slow? 15 seconds passed on the timer in about 2 minutes real time. =O

Yes, the game is slow. All emulated GC games are, with the exception of Bust-A-Move 3000.
