A few linux questions...

Here they are... I'm running Slackware BTW :

1. I noticed that Linux is loads images is kinda a slow way... Linux is installed on a Pentium3 800 Mhz laptop with a 8 Mb Trident Video Card. xf86 is configured with the default Trident driver... Programs like Kview loads images kinda slow,( considering that WinXP with his built in Image viewer load them is a fast way) My question now is: How can I optimize my sysem for this? or is there a program like the Image Viewer that Windows XP has? I'm asking for this because I have a lot of pictures...

2. Is there some program to copy files making "drag and drop" in a kinda easy way in Linux? I know how to copy files using the console but I need something more versatile.

3. How I know if my Linux version is pirated? bahhh just kidding ;)

1) Several things come to mind:
a) Could be the driver for your card
b) Could be kview being slow - try gthumb or pornview (not kidding, it's named that)
c) Do you have dma for your harddrives enabled?

2) Erm KDE has excellent drag and drop, better than windows. Dunno what you mean.

4. What file system do you recommend: EXT2, EXT3 or Reiserfs ?

ext3 - tried and true, best for critical systems.
reiserfs - mostly rock solid, i've seen a few corrution issues (not personally) but this is way faster then ext3 and, well, it has a cool name :)

So which one do you personally recommend Malcolm?

ext3 will be enough to start with and is a little bit easier to set up than reiserfs as it's the native linux file system and all tools are generally installed by default.

oh...nub linux question thread!

6. I got a Radeon 7000/VE. You heard of getting any sort of meaningful 3D acceleration from this card? The firegl drivers dont work, because its for 8500's and up. And when I installed DRI, it messes up glxgears...

Ive pretty much given up, but if you guys heard of anything, Im willing to try it.

t0rek: gaim seems to work quite well. Also try Ayttum or something.

Sorry, since it didnt work out well (glxgears not displaying well, no performance boost), I uninstalled it and restored my old xf86config's. If you are sure DRI is the way to go, Ill give it another go.

is there anything i should look out for when installing this time?

Gaim/Kopete/Amsn.

Google is your friend. As to DRI, all I had to do to get it working was to emerge xfree-dri and change the driver in my xf86config... What distro are you using? And yes, dri is the way to go on all older radeons.

yeah DFX, that famous plugin fo Winamp that enhances the MP3 sound...

AlphaWolf

I prey, not pray.
The MAD mp3 decoder engine has been ported to winamp too, and its a hell of a lot better than the DFX decoder.
