Please read the entire post for an explanation on how to obtain rom images.

As stated in the rules, rom images are illegal and are not allowed to be asked for on this forum. Asking for roms is not limited to, but includes the following: Asking for roms, asking for a specific rom, asking for a location to find a rom or roms, asking for people who have roms, implying a rom search, or any derivative of the above. The reason for this rule is simple. Emutalk is not a piracy board and eliminating rom requests eliminates excess lamers. Most of us have no time for rom beggers and those people tend to get shunned as petty pirates who have no other interest in emulation other then playing games illegally.

So to answer the question "How do I get roms" I reply the following. Open up internet exploiter (or nutscrape or oprah if you will) and type in http://www.google.com in to your address bar. Press enter. Now type in "N64 Roms". You will have to do a lot of sifting through the crap and the porn. Eventually, you will find a downloadable rom image. When I first entered emulation, this was my primary way of obtaining rom images. Emulation was also so new, rom sites were plentiful. Now that you have learned the rules of rom piracy on this board and how to obain your own illegal software, I highly recommend you do not post here or piss off anyone else with your rom requests. You will get no where!!!

This is a public service announcement from your local moderator/emu author. This annoucement was paid for by Emulation64 staff. You are now going to continue with your regularly scheduled mundane life. Have a nice day :)

I can imagine people will start joining the emu64 channel to ask for roms now jvolel :) For the record, there are no roms in #emulation64. No more discussion of where to get roms. :) But for the sake of those who are new... *bump*

Well yeah there are quite many ways to get roms and probably the best is " NewsBin " progs...... If you log on to a news binary, "n64-arcade-roms" *or something like that* for an example... you can get 18 GB of N64 roms =) I didn't download them tho but i tested and it works =)

?????????????????????????
I'd just say "asking for roms is illegal, and thus, we will not be telling you where to get roms. And asking for them is against the rules as well, so don't do it."

Should lure some rom-looking users to sense...hopefully.

Here's how to download all the free roms quickly and easily:
Buy a GameShark, v 3.0 or above, I have v3.3 (bought 3.2, upgraded)

go to cmgsccc.com and go to downloads and get GSCC (You'll have to find the two required files, search on google, I assume they are easy to find, but I got them packed in with an older version of the software).
hook a printer cable from your gameshark to your computer (the kind with female on both sides I believe, but check the back of your computer/gameshark)

turn on the N64 with the game you want the rom of in the gameshark. while on the title screen on the gameshark, go to "Ram Edit" in GSCC and click "Dump ROM" under N64 Super Options (or something similar)

Click yes, then choose where to save the rom.

There you go, you've got the rom you wanted legally and probably for free (assuming you already had a gameshark, but they are nice to have anyway if you had to buy one)

This program has lots of other "fun" uses, too, so play around with it. It's nice to have it hooked up while a friend is playing, you can activate all sorts of "codes" while they are playing. ie taking Mario's hat away randomly, replacing it with another, etc.

There you go, legal roms, I bet nobody who reads this post will follow these directions, but oh well.

(Btw, if you can't find the two required files, do a search for "GSCC2000" and download that, then overwrite the old files with the new ones from the version you downloaded first)

Gee, where do people get this from?
Any redisturbing, including backups, even for personal use, is ILLEGAL!
Yes, that means that dumping roms from the gameshark is ILLEGAL.

Concerning backing up your own rom, i'm not sure it's that illegal you know. It's in a gray area... Nintendo try to frighten you by writting on their manual that it's illegal, but they can say what they want...

In many country (at least in the european union), customer can back up material such as video, music and games for their own use. It's even illegal to create an 100% copy protected media unless the company can replace damaged ones for free... But even if company claim to do so, you're never sure that they'll still exist 10 years later, so the law generally consider that if u find a way to back it up it's ok... And about the infringement of copy protection patent, it's also a false argument because you don't need to know how their things work to do what has been explained in this thread for example and even if you have to, reverse engineering isn't illegal as long as you don't use the knowledge you get to sell something similar i think...

Nintendo can claim that they'll remove their extra guaranty, and they won't replace damage media if you copy your rom, but it's the worse thing they can do theoretically imo.

Yes, Nintendo says it's illegal to copy them, but it's not. It falls under fair use, you have a liscence to use your game in any way you want, so long as you only use it one way at a time. In other words, you can't play the game with one hand on the computer and the other on the N64 (OK, not the most likely scenario, but still). "Archival or backup" copies are legal, even though it says they are not in the manual. And there's no way to detect a rom has been dumped anyway, it's just an idle threat. And besides, this isn't one of those "*wink nod* personal use instructions", I am legitimately telling people how to do it for themselves to copy ROM's legally. (This is according to US Copyright Law). And anyone who is afraid of "Legal action" of playing your ROMs. If you distribute them, however, you will most likely face a cease and desist order, then legal action if you don't comply. Nintendo doesn't want to alienate any customers by suing them, though they will not be so kind to distributers.

(Edit: Added information, and removed comments about manuals saying it was ok, I checked and it's said it was illegal since at least SNES)
