i used those programs for a while before. They are in general pretty stable, and it doesnt affect performance, it only uses your cpu's idle time. On the other hand, they dont seem to do much, programs like this cannot replace good physical cooling (hsf and such).

So is it worth using?

I use it on my ancient P75 laptop, the area under the CPU gets hot enough to melt plastic after 2-3 hours of MW2. :)

CPUIdle really cools it off, it becomes about hand temperature.:bunny:

If you have a use for it, i.e unstable system, you could use CPUidle or any other system to make the CPU a little cooler but if you system is stable, it won't really make any difference.
