Linux and my Modem

well my modem is not working under my new linux (man 8.1) and i was wondering how i find out if my modem is a winmodem or if it will work under linux? i'm trying to find some info around the net but haven't found much. any help will be greatly appreciated

under device manage all it says is 56k Voice Modem

It is probably a winmodem because a non-winmodem would be recognized in linux.

It is probably a winmodem but i know that for example olitec modems have proprietary drivers that can be downloaded on their site.
