the company also revealed it would be creating spin-off titles and sub-series focusing on characters from FF titles. No specifics were given on any of these announcements, except to say that the first of these spin-offs would originate with characters from FFXII.

I think it's because Sony invested money in them and they were dumb enough to waste all that money on the looser movie too. I suspect they have run out of ideas because FF9 had a simliar concept as FF7 (the greatest and most famous of there series).

They might be better off remaking FF7 with some fun enhancements in the gold saucer and perhaps increasing the number of things to do :)
