I cannot get the backgrounds in battle to load they are always black, is there any way possible to fix this?

Did you try the Glide64 Napalm plugin?

This issue has been known for a long time, and you'd know this too had you bothered to read the Project64 GameFAQ that is bundled with the emulator.

But like it was already suggested by p_025, use another graphics plugin, preferably Glide64 napalm is your integrated chip can handle it. Take note that even Glide64 might not fix the graphical issues completely.
