Retexturer: Pietschie, Bad Randolph

Hello there. I’m working together with Bad Randolph on this Super Smash Bros. retexture project. Our intention is to improve the graphics within the game so textures look even sharp and detailed when playing in HD (this is how the name came into existence because we always play Smash on a full HD TV. So that’s the target device on which our textures should look good.) We’re mainly doing textures of the multiplayer part (characters, items, maps, backgrounds, in game effects) but some parts of the menu and single player have also been done. Furthermore we try to make new textures look like the the original, only improved obviously. However sometimes we also design textures a bit different from the original.

Started in: 03-2008

We are also using textures from _pm_s SSB Hires Textures Pack v0.31. He did a great job at retexturing text in Smash Bros.
We also retextured some of the textures he had done already but some of his textures are still in use on our screenshots,
exspecially the text textures. His thread is:
http://www.emutalk.net/showthread.php?t=26284

Update
Finished in: 12-2008
Amount of textures done: 2900+ (about 800 textures from _pm_’s pack)

I prepared a website if you want to compare some retextures with originals:

Oh holy crap! I'm honored to be the first comment! Wow you guys are very talented for sure! You guys got the backgrounds done perfectly, they line up amazingly well. I can't wait to see more progress from you guys. I'm sure your project will be a valuable addition to this site as well as others! :bouncy:

Looks amazing.

One thing I thougt of: In SSB you only have a side vide, so you can make textures that look 3D from this point of view, like in the 2nd pic

I must say i´m very impressed. I especially like how well tiled everything is. For example, the back of great fox. The tiling is perfect. And the first screen, wow, looks silky smooth, the edges are perfect, nothing jaggy... Really great!

Thanks a lot for your replies. As you may noticed the mushroom kingdom maps background is still using its original textures. I'm currently doing the background textures of it. Will make a updated screen of it with the new background when its done :)

The Starfox map, Kirbys Dreamland and Yoshis map are done 100%

Moved pictures to a more reliable server now, because the server I used before seems to have some problems at the moment.

- Mushroom Kingdom is finished now
- Link has some new textures
- Captain Falcon has new textures
- Background in Kirbys Dreamland has bigger textures now
- some new FX Effects done

One thing though, you got rid of the cardboard edges on the Yoshi's Story platforms. Why so?

Hello PIETSCHIE AND BAD RANDOLPH. I Think you're doing a great job about this texture pack. It's awesome!!!!. But I have some questions about it:

You said this pack was based on mp's texture pack. That means you use the same textures on screen menus?¿?¿ The best problem on that pack was this kind of background textures...

How Many textures will have the pack?? It's a totally retexture project???

And...What happend with the fu***g tube on Mushroom Kingdom scene?¿?¿?¿ xDDDDDDDDD It was happened the same on mp's pack lol

Nothing more to say. Simply your job is awesome.

First of all thanks to everyone again. Reading your comments really is a good motivation =)

You said this pack was based on mp's texture pack. That means you use the same textures on screen menus?¿?¿ The best problem on that pack was this kind of background textures...
For example we don't retexture the texts or buttons which have already been retextured by _pm_ in a well execurted manner. It wouldn't really make sense because the ones that have been done already look good so it would be a waste of time to do them again.
But we want to retexture the characters and the stages (including backgrounds) almost completely on our own. Still this doesn't mean we don't touch other things at all. _pm_'s pack wasn't comeplete, so we have also retextured text, menu buttons and such which hasn't been done yet.
All in all we are focusing on the ingame multiplayer but nevertheless we've also done many other textures.

How Many textures will have the pack?? It's a totally retexture project???
We probably won't redo every single texture because that would really be a lot of work and there's many textures which don't really make a difference. At this time we've already done about 1500 new textures.

And...What happend with the fu***g tube on Mushroom Kingdom scene?¿?¿?¿ xDDDDDDDDD It was happened the same on mp's pack lol
The tube is a 3D object so it's not the fault of the texture. The emulator/video plugin somehow seems to distort it... dunno...

I used to play SSB with my brother Pietschie on his Full HD in 1080p but meanwhile he has moved. So I'm not exactly sure but I think that you can indeed set resolution into 1080p.

We have not set ourselves a deadline or anything like that so it's done when it's done. All the characters have been completed yesterday so there are mainly the stages left to do:

Stages:
Dream Land 100%
Sector Z 100%
Mushroom Kingdom 100%
Yoshi's Island 100%
Congo Jungle 100% (though a few textures are from _pm_'s pack)
Saffron City 85% (only background left to do)
Hyrule Castle 85% (only background left to do)
Planet Zebes 85% (only background left to do)
Peach's Castle 85% (only background left to do)

It shouldn't take too long but I can't guarantee anything ;)

gitech
August 21st, 2008, 17:29
Awesome.

Hey, are you guys getting slowdown with your hires pack w/ Rice with 4 players like Mollymutt and Datadayne report due to textures loading up in real time during play?

Bad Randolph
August 21st, 2008, 17:43
We have played with four players a few times without any problems if you meant that. A problem is though that we are getting slowdowns when a character is selected multiple times at once. With two Kirbys it's okay but with two Falcons it's not playable. I think there was a topic about this problem somewhere but I don't know if it contained a solution to this.

gitech
August 21st, 2008, 19:05
Yep, that's what I mean. Rice has a bug that causes certain textures to load again and again with every frame. There are two things that cause this.

1. A bug that causes textures with "half" of their file name being the same to be loaded on every frame. (I'd bet a million dollars that the different textures that are used for Falcons different colors have the same first or second half of their file name.)

2. Since Rice loads textures in real time during play this bug shows itself as slowdown. This is because the plugin is being forced to load up these textures again and again with every frame.

This can be solved/avoided by simply adding a texture caching option similar to Glide64. If we could select to cache the textures they would not have to be loaded in real time...ever...and hence no slowdown would occur.

This is a solution that completely avoids having to "fix" the bug. At the same time it would improve performance of the plugin for use as a playback plugin for any texture pack as any game would never stutter due to the loading up of hires textures for any game element in real time during play.

Though it would take a programmer to add this "Texture Caching Option" to Rice.

When I asked Mudlord if this could be done the day before he announced his work on Rice was dead...his answer was simply..."of coarse it can be done"

Any programmers out there that would like to try adding this feature?

My full proposal on this can be found in post #17

here: Research thread for slowdown fix, "Trouble Textures" = CRC dupes ? (http://www.emutalk.net/showthread.php?p=406094#post406094)

Bad Randolph
August 21st, 2008, 19:32
Ah, thanks for the info.

(I'd bet a million dollars that the different textures that are used for Falcons different colors have the same first or second half of their file name.)
And congratulations - you would just have won a million dollars ;)

And yeah, it would be really great if anyone could give it a try!

August 22nd, 2008, 22:12
I didn't post for a while but I have been working on the pack all the time :)
Had a bit less time then usual because I moved and had to get a lot of things done

Just like Bad Randolph said, almost all the characters are done and the maps
are nearly finsihed, too. But maps take some time, especially the backgrounds.

ppmeis asked for some 1080p screens. I tried to make some in full HD but in fullscreen
the aspect ratio gets distorted in width, at least with rice's plugin which I am using.
There is a glide64 for widescreens, don't know if its different in displaying the game
at 1080 fullscreen. While playing I never find it annoying but I decided to make some
screens in windowed mode with the right aspect ratio but with a high resolution as well.
Here they are :)

The compare website, which you can look at here
http://pietschie.lima-city.de/emutalk/compare.html
will be updated soon. I'll post some high resolution pics to compare :)

More screens of the new Peachs Castle and Planet Zebes are coming soon as well

I'm pretty sure the emulation of N64 and the community its connected with will live on for a long time :)
And beeing able to play the games with texture packs giving them much more details on a HD TV in a much
higher resolution raises the longtime playability even more :)

I think the N64 is the ideal system for those improvements because the games polygons and textures
aren't too much. Even if it takes some time, doing a complete texture pack for a game is quite manageable.
I couldn't think of another system where this could work as good. Newer 3D game systems are getting to complex.

Yep Elite Knight is right, we're using Rice.

Pietschie
August 25th, 2008, 19:23
this is for glidehq plugin or rice plugin?

It also works with gilde64 plugin of course.
But at the moment it works better with rice plugin. I have used the glide64 napalm release with our
pack but some textures are fitted wrong in place and furthermore I noticed that it doesn't
(fully) support half transparancy in pngs wich I use in some of my textures.

But despite from that it works quite well in glide64, too. Something which I like more here
is that it uses memory cache for the textures. With rice video plugin I'm experiencing massive
problems in the planet zebes stage with highres textures on because there are many textures
changing from frame to frame (lights switching on and off, lava glows ..and so on)
Rice is slowing down here because everytime something changes it loads the
texture new again.

And of course we will release the project when its done - hopefully soon. But we are just people too. School is back in for me and Pietschie has to work. When we posted this thread Bad Randolph and I had holidays and lots of time to
work on this, thats why we made fast progress during this time. I'm working now
and just like Bad Randolph said, you need to take your time doing textures and I
don't have that much time at the moment. Of course we're both still doing this
retexture with the same enjoyment like when we started it. And furthermore this
pack will be finished, that's for sure. That there can't be consistent progress
all the time should be self-evident.

In addition to the first compare website I made a second for highres pictures now
(best viewed on a large screen of course):
http://pietschie1.pi.funpic.de/comparehd.html

The planet zebes in the last pics does not have its new background at the moment.

To return to the aspect ratio problem at 1080p here is a screenshot taken at
1920x1080px fulllscreen mode. Its slightly smaller because I cut off the black edges.
But what you can clearly see is that it gets distorted in width. I never find it
annoying during gameplay but maybe this could be fixed by some video plugin one day?

http://pietschie1.pi.funpic.de/SMASH-BROTHERS-33.jpg

And last but not least a short video showing the new ground texture in planet zebes.
During gameplay it will look like the metal surface is reflecting the map :)

well that's just flat out wrong. haha.

Not totally. What indeed is better than in Brawl is the quality of textures. Brawl uses textures with
a much lower resolution. I'm playing Brawl on a full HD tv and I can clearly see the pixels of most textures.
Another fact is that you can play Super Smash Bros. in a much higher resolution than its successor.
Brawl only supports a maximal resolution of 720p which kinda sucks on a full HD. It doesn't look bad
but everything is blury and washed out.
On the other hand Brawl has a much higher amount of polygons of course.
And the N64 Smash doesn't have any particle effects.

Wow. This is my first post on these forums that I care to emphasize.

I am a huge gamer, and still to this day find the Super Smash 64 the "best" multiplayer game in terms of skill IMHO.

This game was huge when it came out, and is still huge today.

You can mention Super Smash Brothers to anyone, and they have played this N64 version it seems. It is/was one of the most popular games made.

What I'm trying to get across is, this is huge what you guys are doing for the community. I can't believe you aren't asking for money-- being that's what some people do and usually run off with a project and the donated money, but after reading your posts I trust that you won't turn into one of those, and I take your "promise" that you posted in this thread that stated "this project will be completed and released" to heart.

I am sounding quite melodramatic, but this actually IS a huge deal to me. I'm starting up a Super Smash n64 clan at my University here in Minnesota, and have been using the emulator and 4 adapters on my Samsung 32" HDTV for some time now. Every day I have been practicing with guys on my floor in the dormitories, and this game has become an addiction. I let people know about your project, and they practically cummed all over me.

I will be checking the progress of this EVERY DAY from here on, and I hope you can find time to finish it. You are truly going to make every brawl/melee player reconsider coming back to play this game after they see this project's entirety.

This means a lot to us Pietschie and Bad Randolph, and I thank you for putting your time into this.

If you're an *******, you'll guess the answer in years, if you're nice, you'll answer in months, and if in weeks, you are the ****ing king. I know this is hard to ask, you don't have to tell me that it's hard to tell or any of that, just give me the best estimate. If there was constant progress all the time I could guess it easily. But there isn't. Like I mentioned in one of my posts before there was a time we did lots of textures everyday but now both of us are in a very busy phase. It's true that there isn't much left to do for us. We will release it when everything of the multiplayer part we wanted to do is done and we are happy with the result, not earlier. If we had the time all the last bits could be done in a week but I guess it'll take at least one more month. But don't rely on that too much. You'll have to be patient.

You guys just take your time. Rather have it finished perfectly than rushed out.

OMG

That is TRULY MAGNIFICENT!

The changes are dramatic, and the thing that's so great about this pack is that it retains the original style of Super Smash Bros. So when I play the game, it feels the same and blends the same. Yet it's so great at bringing such high-resolution, clear textures as well. It's perfectly matched.

The textures DEFINITELY have massive amounts of effort put into them. You made each background (mostly) from scratch, and they all look amazingly correct.

The release of this will be amazing. Don't rush; keep a good, solid pace, and don't worry, you'll be done. :sp_canada

It's only the brown one of Samus' outfits which is monochromatic. I didn't like the brown too much so I tried to make it kind of like Dark Samus. The other outfits are just like the original ones.

I got a few easy questions for anyone that wants to. (some can probably only be answered by Bad Randolph or Pietschie).

1. This will for sure work under Project 64 1.6, right? (Because I noticed there is no High Res textures forum for any other n64 emulator than 1964, and haven't used 1964 before. <--*this is my most newb question I've ever asked I believe*)

2. Did you fix the bent tube in the Mushroom Kingdom?

I might ask a few more later on.

I actually searched for an answer, but it's literally hard to find stuff if you aren't completely active and view all the threads, because search results are very misleading. Great job though guys. Keep it up.

Pietschie
October 30th, 2008, 00:22
Always feel free to ask your questions :)

1. It will! Because Project 64 can work with exactly the same videoplugins, rice video for example. I personally prefer 1964 because I have less problems using it. Project 64 freezes sometimes or just shuts itself down. I never experienced those problems with 1964.

2. It's not a problem with the textures, it's a problem with the videoplugin. Rice video sometimes distorts some of the ingame objects. I use rice, thats why the bent tube is distorted in our screenshot. The Glide64 videoplugin doesn't have this problem, it always shows the objects right. But dispite from the distortion rice works better for me.

X-Fi6
October 30th, 2008, 03:56
On ATI cards, generally Glide64 performs better than Rice. This is what I've noticed with many different ATI cards.

_yo_wasup_
October 30th, 2008, 10:23
Might I just ask what the hype is about in Project 64 1.7? What is different in it anyway? A new Rice plugin that does what differently? that and new cheats, is that it?

cerebus5
October 30th, 2008, 11:30
I've got PJ64 1.7 and I kind of prefer 1964. I don't know why but it just gives me less hassle with plugins and game saves.

1964 is pretty much obsolete. Generally, you should use either Project64 1.6, 1.7 if you paid for it and received it directly from Project64's site, Mupen64, Mupen64Plus if you are using Linux, or Mupen64 TAS Edition.

Suggestion: could you make Captain Falcon's suit "pop" more? Make the texture look more 3d, rather than anti-aliased/smooth/cel-shaded? It's rather flat right now, so if you could bevel the different areas of the suit / add drop shadows / make the saturation more dramatic in different areas, it would make wonders of a difference. :D Thanks.

Yo wasup, that's the way it is in the normal game. You can't change the polygons or 3d models of anything in n64 games (not *yet* at least............... it might be possible in like 10 years but I have no clue since I'm not a gfx plugin programmer). You can only swap the textures applied to them.

Because Jabo's Direct3D8 1.6 doesn't support hires textures. Sorry but the download size is the least thing we are considdering. Especially since 50mb is really not that huge. The textures themselvels cannot be compressed (with Photoshop's "save for web") because it seems that the video plugin is not able to use them then. And the folder cannot really be compressed because it contains only many small files so WinRar is hardly any use.

Even though it´s a LAN party, they still play offline games. It´s a gathering, where people have fun. Mostly on LAN, but also "normal" games. My bro actually brought a SNES over there recently. People could not get over Yoshi´s sound when he attempted to stay in air.

If you think 50mb is bad today, you need to go cut your **** off. I would download this pack if it were 50gb. 50mb will take about 2 minutes on my cable, and it shouldn't be too much longer for most DSL users.

I just made a professional sign-up sheet for a campus Super Smash Tournament, and I hope we can get this out by early December so we can use it in the tourney. I don't want to push you at all, so don't worry about this, but that would be awesome if you could pull it off!

When this is released, we need to make a torrent for it. This way we can all seed to each other and maybe get better speeds. (I know its only 50megs, but owell, I still like the size of torrent file, they're good for sharing with friends so they can dl too!)[Torrent files are under a meg and just carry the info for dling the file from other peers, once you finish dling a file, you keep it on and you will send out bits of information from the file to others dling the file, the more, the faster.]

Please note that the lava textures in Planet Zebes unfortunately may cause slowdowns. It's not a problem with the textures but with the plugin. There are also a few less important zipped textures with the same problem. Being zipped they won't load - I just wanted to include those textures nevertheless. Also the "SMASH" writing in the title screen is pretty displaced - I haven't figured out how exactly this one works.

Anyway, have fun!

1. I get "failed to load plugin: C:\Program files\Project 64 1.6\Plugin\RiceVideo6.1.3Dx9.dll"
the texture still works though....(am able to play as though nothing has happened, but....)

2. my frame rate goes all over the place with the texture enable, went from 80 to 0, then back...kind of unplayable... (without textures, everything is fine, up to 70-80 average)

3. is it supposed to load texture everything I start the game/

4. Also, even when I have 70-80 framerate i still get choppy gameplay...

I have checked this thread like every day since the summer, and today it is finally here!

I messed around with 2 different video plugins to get the HD textures to work. I first tried Mudlord's Rice 1.6.3 - DX9 plugin, and that didn't seem to that well of a job getting all the textures working.. mainly the players were just modified this plugin also experienced a bunch of random crashes. I then tried the Mudlord's Rice 1.6.4 and most the textures work, and I am very impressed with the outcome. This still isn't a perfect plugin, or at least how I have mine set up. I wasn't able to change the antiailising for some reason, (I'm not familiar with other plugins). I tried to use Glide64 Napalm 1.1 and I couldn't get it installed for some reason. I would extract from the plugin directory in the archive to my plugin folder and then was going to select it in the settings of p64, but I got a warning message every time i started p64 that said it cannot find the plugin I put in there. They were in there, but I didn't spend 20 minutes trying to figure this one out, so it's probably an easy fix if anyone knows how.

Here's what it looks like with Mudlord's Rice 1.6.4.

As you can see, the tower isn't the same as yours: (this is not my screeny):

yeah, finally the awesome pack is done! thx you two for making something so amazing! :D

but unfortunately i have a really weird problem. I'm using glide napalm 1.1 and the textures work fine, but somehow loading the pack causes the controller plugin to get broken. :plain: so while loading the textures (in pj 64 btw) an error screen which says that there is a problem with the n-rage plugin and everything gets stuck. As i tried jabo's standard plugin the pack loaded, but i couldn't do anything since the cursor cruised around on its own. Thats kinda strange ^^

Hi guys,

Great pack!!! Super Nice Bros! ;) I congratulate you! :)

Yep, the slowdown is caused in Rice by the duplicate texture name bug. Look at the first set of numbers (the DRAM CRC, the first part of the file name) in the texture names and you will see that they are the same. Your "overflow" zipped file is full of them. I found the same thing in the planet zebes folder. But, I'm sure you noticed this. This is the same problem I have with CLOD.

This is cause for even more enthusiasm for a texture caching option in Rice Video. ;) :)

I am not trying to hijack your thread here but those who are interested should chime in on my CLOD thread (http://www.emutalk.net/showthread.php?t=43535&page=28) to see who is currently trying to do something about it. If you would like to read up on the background of the problem read THIS (http://www.emutalk.net/showthread.php?t=44649). If you can contribute in any way, please do. If you just want this option/fix like the rest of us who use Rice, chime in, cast your vote and get involved. Getting a texture caching option in Rice Video (like Glide/Napalm) will fix (bypass) this texture name duplicate related slowdown bug and improve performance for not only SSB and CLOD with duplicate texture names, but for ALL games when using Rice Video for Hi-res textures as the textures will never need to load in real time during play. :)

Ok, enough "rallying the troops".

Bad Randolph and Pietschie, just thought I'd hint to you that you should update your first post with the pack download. ;)

Again, great work!

Jay

I had the same issue with Glide 1.1 Napalm as Another N00b. It kept happening the other day, and no matter what I tried it wouldn't work correctly. I would get some new textures, but was missing the majority of the backgrounds. Frustrated, I shut it down for the day. Then, I pick it up today with the same settings and magically all the new textures were there. It was GLORIOUS!! I played it for a while, but tried tweaking different settings to optimize it for recording. All of a sudden, I was back to the same problem. They were same textures I was missing before, come back to haunt me.

I tried deleting the cache in desperation, praying that something didn't load correctly. After that didn't work, I tried Mudlord's 6.1.4 plugin with the exact settings posted by Pietschie at the top of this page. It's kind of like an old tv - sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't. The furthest I could get was the 3rd stage in single player, but most of the time it crashed in stage 1.

I had problems too with Rice+Hyrule, but after using the settings posted by Pietschie all the textures show up properly. Of course we still have the slowdown problem on our hands..

On the other hand, the Glide plugin has no slowdown whatsoever, having a cache option, but it still causes weird problems and apparently random crashes..

Damn. I still think the Glide plugin is the better option, but just because it shows all the glowing effects on the characters. Rice/Mudlord's doesn't do that right?

The lag you are experiencing is caused by the texture name duplicate bug in Rice video I mentioned in my post above.

It has nothing to do with your CPU or graphics card. What's happening is, these textures that have duplicate DRAM CRC's (first part of their file names) are being reloaded from your hard drive on every frame.

The textures in the "overflow" zip file in the pack are the same type and will cause slowdown as well. That is why Bad Randolph and Pietschie zipped them up, so they wouldn't be loaded and cause slowdown in game where they would be used when using Rice video.

This is a relevant problem and awareness needs to spread so that we can encourage a TEXTURE CACHING option in Rice Video! Tell your friends. ;) Let's get everyone involved. :) Please take the time to read my post above (#243) and follow the links to learn more about it.

SSB is only one of many games that would benefit from this being added to Rice. As a bonus, ALL games with texture packs for Rice would see a performance increase as well, as hi-res textures would never have to load during play.

Let's make this happen,
Jay

anyone got PJ64 settings? the Zelda stage looks...similar, well to my eyes...

Well if you're using Rice plugin maybe you should try out these settings which Pietschie posted http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/6955/smashhdvt5.jpg

Or try to increase the ram 4 to 8 like someone mentionned.

Then again the map supposedly to looks like this. If you have it then you're okay i guess so...

It's odd but I can't get the black Samus. She's always orange.

Well Samus's original color is Orange. But when you're trying to change the colors it doesn't want to? Kinda odd really..:plain:

I wonder why your textures are so scaled up?

ugh i don't know. Hmm well it might be because of the screen resolution?

He's right, the tower and the green roof textures are way way to large in the screenshot...

No, it has nothing to do with the screen resolution. Its because you are using glide.

The Hyrule walltextures, the green roof textures and and also the one used on the lower level (the spot where you can't go onto with the other green roof on it) are always displayed wrong in glide, like in ypur screenshot. It's the same in other maps and some textures are missing completely. Glide64 also has problems with some of the halftransparent textures. If you want to display the textures perfectly you will have to stick with rice 6.1.4.

Here are all my settings for rice again. Sparx pointed out that I had some of the options set to partially enabled. I couldn't see any difference when partially and fully enabled, but I now have them fully enabled.

I took some time today to fix the "SMASH" logo on the start screen for you guys.

These are free to use in anyway such as adding them to your next release and/or adding it to your first post for download.

Merry Christmas!

Download: SSB HD - SMASH textures fixed patch: (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7CFA0ERW) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7CFA0ERW

Users: To add it to your existing pack just unzip it to your ...Plugin\hires_texture\SMASH BROTHERS\Title Screen folder to replace the existing "SMASH" folder. :)

PS: I get the correct Zelda Stage texture size (scaling) with Rice video.

Also, I noticed all the Yoshi's and their icon textures have the "same DRAM CRC" causing severe slowdown. Just another example of why we need a Texture Caching option in Rice Video. ;)
