I'm a total noob and bad with software, so I'm sure I'll seem like a total retard to you guys, but when I try to start my ROM I get the message "cannot open a rom because plugins have not succesfully initialized".

When I go to the settings to set the video plug-in the message "Direct3D failed to initialize ERROR CODE: 8876086C" followed by "The default selected video plug-in is missing or invalid. Check that you have at least one compatible plug-in file in your plug-in folder". How can I do that?

Try to download Project 64 again from their site (http://www.pj64-emu.com/downloads/Download/Project64/Binaries/)
Choose v1.6, since the 1.7 is still under development.

The plugins are not missing. The error messages have more to do with incompatible/old/busted video card drivers or in some cases, simply bad (i.e. old, incompatible) video hardware.

Or then your DirectX installation is corrupt.

So, what video card do you have? Also, to make sure that no plugins really aren't missing, what are the contents of Project64's Plugin folder?
