View Full Version : Analog stick issues

Most likely this is just a newbie question, so sorry if I'm asking something which has already been covered.

Recently I purchased a controller adapter with the hopes that I could play games in PJ64 (version 1.6) more like I had on the console. The adapter I purchased seems to have no name brand; it's identical to the one in this eBay listing (http://cgi.ebay.com/Nintendo-64-Adaptoid-PS2-N64-USB-PC-CONTROLLER-ADAPTER_W0QQitemZ230142651251QQihZ013QQc ategoryZ21200QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem), though this is not the listing I bought from. PJ64 lists it as a 4 axis, 16-button joystick.

The problem is simple: I've set the deadzone down to 0% and the range to 100%, yet I can't do any analog stick actions at 100% (unlike when I use the keyboard). Setting the deadzone higher or the range lower only seems to worsen the problem. The first game I tested this on was Smash Bros., in which I could not move the stick far enough to dodge or run. I've tested a couple other games with similar results (I've also tested it on another system - Gens running Sonic & Knuckles - I didn't seem to have any problems, but then that might be because the Genesis just used a D-pad). I've also tried another controller (both official N64 controllers), with no improvement.

Would it be the fault of the adapter I'm using? What should I do at this point?

Thanks in advance.

Calibrate the analog stick.

Okay, I assume you mean the option in the control panel. I never saw that... actually on the test page there (Win2k is my OS), the crosshair couldn't reach the border of the test area. After calibrating it seemed more normal, but I'm not sure if I did it right. On the "press up/down" page, the blue bar stayed very close to 50%. On the "rotation" page I'm not sure what to do, there.

As far as PJ64 was concerned, absolutely nothing changed. Also, in 1.6 I can't seem to get the menu to stop changing - in-game the options cycle as if the control stick were tilted. Nothing seems to stop that, except in 1.5 it doesn't happen. In-game, nothing is fixed yet.

use the nrage plugin instead

First of all it'd be nice if I got a link to these types of things... anyway, I found that plugin, downloaded it and tried to extract it to 1.6's plugin folder. Apparently 1.6 had an older version of that same plugin already installed. So I let it overwrite the old one. There was no change...

EDIT: Nevermind, figured out how to change which plugin to use. Testing...

EDIT 2: Hmm, it works. Thanks... any idea what's wrong with the default plugins?

Jabo's 1.6 is pretty much the basic input plugin.

that and it has issues with quite a few controls..

Damn straight, NRage worked for me. I bought an adaptor two days ago and couldn't get the stick to action 100%, but if you use the NRage plugin you can change the Analog Stick range so that it responds better.

Hope it helps :)
