When I level up the game freezes and I can't continue. Can someone please help me with this problem?

You wouldn't happen to be using cheats, would you? Do you have the latest RDB from the Project64 site?

I'm not using any cheats and I just downloaded the RDB, but it still won't work.

Either get one of the Rice video plugins or Glide64 if you have an OpenGL system.
