Hmm, to choose the lesser of two evils. Difficult choice. To tell you the truth, it depends on the processor you get. VIA is good for intel. They have nice driver updates regularly. Its safe to say if something is wrong with the drivers it will be fixed quickly.
For AMD, I'd reccomend ALI. Just don't get the ASUS A7A266 motherboard. While ASUS makes great motherboards, everyone has to screw up sometime and this was theirs.

wtf? I can't reckommend ali chipsets, the performance just plain sucks. For AMD choose either a newer sis chipset (like the 735) or via (like kt266a). maybe u might even wanna consider the nforce, but it's expensive.
For intel either an intel, sis or via chipset.

WAH! I got BURNED by SiS. But for AMD processors, their new chipset is a lot better than most offerings I've seen. For Intel chips, VIA is the direction I'd go.

KT333 is the fastest (and the most stable) one. Of course it isn't so cheap. I can recommend you the new chipset of SIS 745.
