View Full Version : My "Super Mario 64" Hi-Res Texture Project

Jale
May 16th, 2006, 21:30
Also as an introduction. Though I'm not new in this forum I forgot my previous username and password. I'm Jale, commonly known as Butters in other emulation sites.

Okay, yesterday I've learned how to dump textures with Rice's video and started to look more closely at textures. One of many contribution plans for this site are texture packs. My work in progress is Super Mario 64 textures and it's looking very good so far.

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/5392/mario15pg.jpg (http://img19.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mario15pg.jpg) http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/3233/mario26wn.jpg (http://img19.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mario26wn.jpg) http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/7606/mario34ik.jpg (http://img353.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mario34ik.jpg) http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/6167/mario41xa.jpg (http://img502.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mario41xa.jpg) http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/8266/mario51zx.jpg (http://img353.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mario51zx.jpg)

Well, I haven't even completed the 10% of texturization I'm working hard to complete and launch the pack in the next months. Also, textures you see in the screenshots may vary from the final release.

If the texture pack I'm going to release does good I'll make future projects with other games.

Greetings and have a good day :)

that water texture on 2nd pic looks familiar to me...

May 17th, 2006, 00:24
Looks good, but it just doesn't look like a Mario game. Maybe you should make it a bit more cartoony?

Jale
May 17th, 2006, 03:46
The cartoony thing is what I'm trying to avoid.

It should be just the way Jale wants it to be, itīs his project. Donīt be so picky on it.

I think it looks really good. I love the detail on the pavement and grass.

the water texture looks almost identical to GTA:VC water texture...

the water texture looks almost identical to GTA:VC water texture...
I had to fire up VC just to check...yeah, it looks the same :)

Jale
May 17th, 2006, 17:47
lol, I didn't know it was from GTA Vice City :p

Anyway, I still haven't decided what water texture should I use, so I'm trying with a lot of them.

Today's changes:

http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/6830/untitled120ot.jpg

Water (may change it again).
Trees
Castle rooftopThings are a bit slow this week due to college and because this is the first time I'm in texturing.

Jale

I decided I've done enough to release a very first alpha release of my work.

Notes about this release:

Since this is an alpha stage of my work you won't get a lot of graphic changes (WIP).

Texture changes have been made only outdoors (Castle outdoors/some of the courtyard) and in some shared textures (water, ie: Dire Dire Docks level).

And please, don't ruin my work by changing/modifying textures by yourself or claiming this texture pack as your work. Give credit to my efforts.

So are you making these textures or finding them and putting them into Mario? I ask because of the Vice City water thing.

Jale
May 17th, 2006, 21:30
I got 3 sources for textures:

- Free web resources.
- I make some with 3ds Max, like the sand.
- Texture packs.

I'm not using any GTA Vice City textures.

I have to say I really like the realistic take on mario, especially the trees.

Firstly great work, good to see Mario 64 getting some re-texturing. I had a go myself with the HUD but it didnt turn out that great, no alpha transparencies work on the top HUD. Now what I would say is perhaps you need to be tiling your textures more. the ground texture looks visibly stretched, which if you tiled it more would not be so stark, also the contrast of your textures, try not to make it all look ultra bump mapped, unless you do it tiled like the ground and grass.

Hope this project stays the course, I have always found the lack of detail in Mario 64, disappointing, so hopefully, this will improve on a classic!

Jale
May 18th, 2006, 14:02
Thanks for all your comments and yes, the work would last long because of college work (lack of time), but never dead :)

Now what I would say is perhaps you need to be tiling your textures more. the ground texture looks visibly stretched, which if you tiled it more would not be so stark and grass.
There are stretched areas because 1) I'm working from 32x32 to 128x128 of texture resolution and 2) Those screenshots are prototypes. They may vary from final work.

also the contrast of your textures, try not to make it all look ultra bump mapped, unless you do it tiled like the ground
I'll keep that in mind. Comments like this will improve quality :)

Hi Jale,

Nice work, I like those screenshots.
I think realistic textures are a good idea for Mario64, I also started a little pack some time ago, but didn’t work on it for a while.

Here’s a link: http://www.emutalk.net/showpost.php?p=273724&postcount=157

and screenshots of a later version: http://www.emutalk.net/showpost.php?p=287295&postcount=192

I wanted to create a photorealistic Pack for Mario 64, but after a while I stopped working on them.
What do you think?

This is what I've done, tell me what you think. To me it seems between ultra realistic and cartoony.

Jale
May 18th, 2006, 20:16
Thanks for your support. I'm currently working on 3D textures and not sprites, but we can combine both projects upon final release.

Jale
May 19th, 2006, 06:21
It'll be done in the next months. An estimated release date could be between august and october because I don't know for sure how many textures are there in the game. I'm trying my best to keep this project alive.

Today's progress:

Outdoors (castle) completed, except for the mountain surrounding it.
Main menu completed.
A small part of the castle indoors completed (carpet and walls).
Numbers from 0 to 9 retextured.
Some letters retextured.

Thanks again. I'm making my best to complete this project 100% (or at least 95% of it).

Since I'll be sharing my project with other Super Mario 64 projects, I'm planing to release a Complete Texture Pack (you will be credited too), which consist in 3 subpacks:
World Texture Pack.
Characters Texture Pack.
Sprites Texture Pack.
All of this for the final release there in October.

By the way, these are the changes done so far today:

World 1 (Bomb-Omb Battlefield) almost complete (around 80% of completion).
1UP mushroom has been given a classic SNES look.

My 10 Cents...

I respect and admire that someones going for a more realistic for style. Personally, I'm ticked that nintendo didnt take the direction SmashBros did when gamecube first came out and i'll remain ticked probly til the end of time for this same reason.

about the water texture, it's easily found on google, type in "water texture"
and it's sure to pop up. Rockstar is actually quite known about, at least in the GTA Modding community, for using this or similar methods for thier textures. on the GTA Forums, there was a rather large discussion about some building textures and grass textures from San Andreas that had been found on Google when Vice City was new.

On another note, I swear i recognized a couple SSBM textures in there myself [mojo's] XD

I think this is a cool project, and though I really dont make use of highres textures, Ill check around for screenshots...

This is how Bomb-Omb Battlefield looking is looking after a good retexturization. Like I said above, about 80% of this level has been retexturized.

Still need to change the bridge, trees and boxes.

Easy enough. First get the pack (I put my first release somewhere) then get Rice's Video Plugin. Once Rice is installed unzip the pack with the SUPER MARIO 64 folder inside the hires_textures folder, then go to the plugin's config, click the Texture Filters tab and check if "Load Hi-Res textures if available" option is enabled.

Sorry, I just work with textures, not with models.

And Zion, I can do that, but only for Project64 default directory.

About the project, it's going slow for now due to college and assignments. No progress made these days, but it doesn't mean the project is dead :)

This is the best that I can make Mario look.

Did you do something to his eyes? It's looks kind of funny. I think the main problem is that they're too close together. When I learned to draw, I was told to keep the distance roughly an eye's length apart. What that means is that if you make a 3 eyed Mario, there would be enough distance between the left and the right eye to fit one more in the middle.

Damn, world one looks amazing! When will you release a demo for us to try out?

HiReZ92
June 10th, 2006, 01:02
I was very interested in changing the water textures in the outside of the castle but I'm having trouble finding it in the texture dumps because all the textures look alike. Does anyone know the dump names for the textures. Also great job on the realistic textures, Jale. This is what they should be doing with the Wii in terms of retro N64 games, improving the textures.

And the other thing is, how do you change Mario's textures and appearence?
I saw it on on the previous pages and just wanted to know how.

VampLordAlucard
June 11th, 2006, 20:47
I know you said you dont do sprites, but cant you or someone change mario a little bit? At least round the edges to make it not look so 64ish, and add a little detail to the face and body and darken the colors to look a bit less cartonny in this realistic world. Cartoon mario + real world = wtf?

Also, how do you do mods like this??

Holy crap, this is freakin awesome! With some of the other hi res texture packs, someone that hasn't played Mario 64 much, or in a long time and doesn't remember exactly how it looked, might not even know there is a change. With this texture pack, however, I don't care how long it's been since you played mario, you'll definitely notice this huge change!

Please don't lose interest in it, I really want to see this completed! :)

Attention, please.

If you've been wondering if the project is dead, well, it isn't, so have faith. I'm here to announce that the project is still alive and I'm just waiting for better work conditions (better Rice releases, better tools, etc).

It'll be delayed, yes, but I won't let this die.

Its a Setup-program compiler., you can compress all files into an self-installing EXE file. You can set where the files will be installed, for ex "program directory\1964\099\plugins\hires_texture s\xx" etc

Install it and try the wizard, and you will understand..

EDIT: and it will install a automatic uninstaller too.

Jale, I am in the process of making my own project and was wondering how you went about in making your tree textures. I tried myself but whenever I did them they never came out right. If you used photoshop or some other editing program, can you explain how you sliced your tree in half and what you did so you got the tree to come out well?

Turgo
August 2nd, 2006, 11:23
Jale,
I hope you dont mind, but i used you texture pack as a base to start my own project. I would also like to help in anyway I can. I'll post some screen shots of what I've done so far. A few things i've done are.
Mario: I redid him from scrach, eye, eye brows, "M" patch on hat, side burns, and overall buttons. I used the newest mario game to date as a texture example.
Red carpert redone, black and white tile redone.... this one looks godly. and the sun on the floor.

Turgo
August 2nd, 2006, 11:31
nice i like the "m" on the hat, I did somthing simular..... well lets just say... I took the texture from a real mario hat ;) but yours seems to be better. You look like you do great work.

but it looks good

@HiReZ92 you could use the slice selector tool..
to use it right click on the slice tool, then choose the slice selector tool (alot of the word "tool"...XD)
then just look on the options menu (the under File, Edit, etc.) and you should see divide and then divide the pixels in half to get the best cut

Turgo
August 7th, 2006, 13:05
thanks.... yeah my friends noticed that too, Im still working on it. For now he has an anger management problem. Btw fyi the the brick textures are the origanal ones. muahaha! I noticed that the game has over sized textured so i all i did was shrunk the textures down and stacked them. Also i darkened them a little as well. Look good so far if i do say so my self, but the damn alpha, and rbg textures, are gona be fun.

I'm going to answer the questions while I was away.

To Hirez92Jale, I am in the process of making my own project and was wondering how you went about in making your tree textures. I tried myself but whenever I did them they never came out right. If you used photoshop or some other editing program, can you explain how you sliced your tree in half and what you did so you got the tree to come out well?

You can slice the tree in half by playing with the canvas. I'll explain later, my head is full :S

And Turgo, of course you can use my project to start yours.

Nick_kidid0
October 5th, 2006, 03:41
Great to hear, and having read this entire post I must say that people should stop worrying about where the textures are from if you've said yourself they're NOT copied from other games :)

Hope to see a final release or even just a fix to the link on the first post so I can checkout an alpha.

Keep up the great work :D

I want to announce that the latest Rice version is stable enough to keep this project running. I'm currently working on "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" instead of "Super Mario 64".

Since I just started yesterday, you'll have to wait a long time until a full release, but I will release regional packs as previews (Hyrule Field Pack, Kokiri Forest Pack, etc).

And about "Super Mario 64", I'm re-working those textures. That means, from the beginning.
