Super Awesome Majora's Mask Project

PROJECT UPDATE - 20th May 2006
Djipi is almost done with the whole of Clock Town, including the interiors of the various buildings. I have pretty much finished the HUD, the subscreen items and text is still to be done, but that will probably be left to last.

I have also been retexturing all of the characters from Clock Town, each takes about 3-4 hours dependant on how many times it takes to get the look right, and how detailed the character is.

Some objects have been done, and some icons also, but these things will be left till near the end, as the locations and characters come first.

Images are scattered throughout the thread.

Official Logo added to the first post. We will update the first post when something new happens with the project, as well as posting a new post. I hope you like the logo, we have decided to keep a wrap on the project for the past few weeks, and we wont be releaseing packs until we are close to complete, but expect screenshots, and other info related to the project as time goes on, you may also see another nice addition to the project if all goes well, its still early in planning, and may not happen, but an Instruction Manual may come along for this pack...

Yeah, i meant to comment on that, REALLY great logo, the best i´ve seen in a long time. Very professional done, was it made by Djipi or mdtauk? And by the way, when i save the logo, the name is cel-majora's-logo. So it will be cell-shaded? Anyway, i know this is gonna be GOOD:bouncy:

Oh, my...

This is... superb!

The quality of the shots is great and also Majora's Mask is more suitable to Toon Shade than Ocarina of Time due to its surrealist atmosfere.

Wow, simply amazing. When this is released, how will you get it fixed so when there is a blur (ie the mask spinning), it won't go black? Thanks for both of your hard work!

hey guys, this is amazing stuff! I love what you have done so far and look forward to more!! I made some ocarina icons for the c-buttons a while ago in the minish cap/wind waker style that i got from hatrix and I think it would go great with this pack, so if you would like to use them go for it! ok, you probably won't but in case you do its ok with me.

EDIT: Also, will you be using any textures from your guy's last cel Majora's Mask pack? Or no?

Deku Link looks ok now but those C-arrows don't really fit in. IMO.

I can confirm that that isnt you're tingle, the screen posted was made with wind waker textures made larger, I have since redone tingle with my own textures I draw by hand, as I have done with the other characters...

Drawn in vector, exported to Photoshop, and resized/recoloured and finally renamed...

you are right, i can see slight differences. its pretty amazing how close i got considering i didnt use any original textures and drew right from the tv screen by hand, no vectors here. looks good though.

Might I ask what vector is? It sounds like a program that I would like to become more aquainted with.

I use Corel Draw, but you can also use Flash and Illustrator. Vector is when you draw shapes which can be resized as much as you want, however you can only use flat colour, gradients, and alpha transparences, so you dont get blend modes and other tools you use in photoshop to add detail using brushes.

Well the whole point of vector images is that they are put together using math so the image becomes points in an equation, so when you resize it the quanities change and there is zero quality loss. When you are designing logos you usually do it in a vector image so it can be used anywhere.

What mdtauk says about you can only use flat color, gradients, and alpha transparencies is incorrect, that is just the limit of his program. There are some people that can make lifelike images using vectors, but they are very very good at what they do. A beginner to vectors is just going to be able to do solid shapes.

The program that really is at the top of making vector images is Adobe Illustrator.

Well vectors can use bitmaps for fills, and effects, but they are not vectors. Illustrator and Corel both use bitmaps in the same way. so in a way The Dave is right.

I think that Gorman looks kinda odd...
But I do love the Happy Mask fellow shown earlier, imo it was the best character you've redone so far.

This is getting even better :D, though I also think Gorman's eyes look odd (maybe the alpha channel is not done correctly).

OT. I remember this game with a special feeling, almost everybody was disgusted with it because the story was not as epic as Ocarina of Time one. From my point of view, MM is better overall OoT because its better graphics, story (is not the hero helping a lady again!), playability (it's replayable indeed, not as OoT where, once you're done, you can't replay a mission) and that gold-like cartdrige!! (Here in Spain OoT cartdrige was white as most N64 were :()

OK i thought there would be some confusion with the gormon family, so a little bit of background.

When I am designing characters' their backstories are important so, the gormons are a family of 3. One brother left to lead a troupe/circus group into entertainment. The other 2 work at the race track.

Gormon the circus leader I have designed as a CLOWN. The Mask and Gormon himself are clowns so I made them look like clowns. The other two brothers look normal (eyes still being tweaked) so here are more screens to illustrate...

The Circus Mask looks really nice - and the other members of the Gorman familly too.

However, it is true that the "first" Gorman became a clown, but when we see him in MM he has lost everythings of this old circus spirit and became selfish and always angry. Thus I think it is a good idea to made his mask a clown mask, but for himself, why not a more conventional style ?
Just my opinion, it's still your project, do as you want ^^

well it isnt until about 11 am till he finds out his troupe wont be performing, so he is dressed as a clown ready to talk to Madame Aroma. his nose goes pink when he is happy talking with them, and later when he is in the milk bar depressed, his nose is purple, so it shows his emotions more so, plus I did the mask in a more traditional clown style to show it at its prime so to say (white face and coloured eyes)

I have just finished the council workers and the town guards, I am starting on the mayor (kafei's dad so similar look to use) and the receptionist...

One of the lances the soldiers are using looks real wierd up close (the pink soldier), but that may be just me.

The look is very sharp, and clean. It couldn't hurt to add a few more details. Without the wind-waker-esque patterns or the future possibility of cel-shading, the world seems a little bare.

this looks great!


just a suggestion. If your doing the whole windwaker style effect you should make the postman look like the rito postman from windwaker who looks like the MM postman. basicly give him a rito postman style look.

1 more suggestion. you should do something really cool with fierce diety, because he's always been my favourite character.

fierce deity is my last retexture (saving it for last) And interestingly enough, I made a minor discovery with the postman. there is a rito with exactly the same face, working inside Dragon Roost. Also rito inspiration has been used...

haha cool find, although when i look at your postman with those eyebrows, eyeliner, and hair minus the bangs it reminds me of will farrel from zoolander, I think it would look good if you left the eyebrows, eyes, and bangs the way they were, but kept all of your other changes (white hair, darker skin color, other cool stuff...) but that's just my humble opinion. Keep up the good work mdtauk!

Hey guys, great work! You are both very talented.

I have been working on retexturing Majora's Mask too for a while, and I was wondering if you wanted some help with this. I have lots of textures I've already made you can use if you want, and I'd love to make some more to help you out. I kindof have a similar style to yours. Hopefully this isn't too many screenshots (maybe I got carried away a little...)

Even if you don't want me to work with you, I think you are doing a great job and I can't wait for your pack to come out. :) Majora's Mask is probably my favorite of the Zelda games.

Also, Djipi that screenshot is absolutely stunning. I love the metal roof the most for some reason. Also like someone else said, the happy mask salesman's face looks completely awesome. The gorons do look pretty impressive. Especially their beards, which look like they did in the windwaker. The sky around the moon is also very windwaker-like.

realy odd moon XD it remenber me andros in starfox 1 and 2 on snes but great work for the other char

for the moon i think a "terminator like" moon will fit more the game with the same color of your moon ,with red light for the eyes , whith white theeth for the mouth and with darker big points of color on the moon ( a litle like the original moon for a not unified color to stop the snes look style)
like that at night you ll see only the tooth and the eyes
or you can try to make something like the stone boss with big hand in the tour of zelda windwaker but instead of use green for the eye light the ray and the runes you can use red or orange!
but dont forget the tooth because the moon is to hod and not scary without them

yea i have use the original one for the tooth (i dont have enof skills... ) and redraw it a litle but for the other textures i have use only a color (the one from djipi moon) and i have use the sponge effect filter and then draw a circle in the same emplacement of the original textures. for the eyes its only circles drawing. i have done it in 20 min. if you whant i can redraw all ;)
this is still wip if you whant i change something i will be hapy to change it i have already redraw the tooth and the eyes but dunno if it will fit the game ...

Here is a bit more progress, remember its all WIP until both me and Djipi like it...

also if anyone here is skilled with the cheat codes, can people try out some various arrangements of the HUD and other OnScreen icons, just to try out some ideas. There is a code out there I think which was used for Djipi's cel-zelda mod, which gives a Wind Waker style layout, but if anyone can come up with a better alignment try it out. The best looking and functioning one will be suggested with the release of the pack...

Also if anyone is willing to have a go at fixing the tiling of the sky, post a message here, and me or Djipi will get in touch...

What's just as cool is the possability that this could work on the XGP or GP2X Console & I could FINALLY beat MM without the jaggad feel of the horrible textures (I remember how much they scared me away when I tried it 2 years ago)

I love this retexture! Only a couple things I don't like.
Links eyes for one... They don't really fit in with the rest of him, they look too round almost.

The best finish to this pack for me would be...
Fierce Deity retextured to be a replica of Adult Link from Ocarina of Time, in cel style!

thats a difficult question...

I have selected all my texture folders and right clicked for properties and it shows so far I have done - 1,618 tiles
but bare in mind some elements use multiple tiles to appear on screen...

We agreed together before starting on the project, that we will not post any packs until it was practically complete, and then perhaps one final pack with any fixed textures or forgotten ones.

Djipi, I would add a shadow to where the mouth hole is, as you would get a shadow there, also, that ocarina icon, the colour is fine, but the black shadow looks odd, I think you should keep all the shadows the same for the items...

I'm still working on the sky, I have an idea I am going to try out, I have found a good way to make the sky look like its 3d in the distance, so i am working on that.

Your tiling really helped me get that sky to work well. The bright clouds never did work properly with the way the game colourizes the textures, so we needed a subtle sky, like the original where no big clouds are visible. It may need more clouds, but that is upto Djipi when he sees it. Its simple enough to update, night sky will be the same but more colour banding, and less clouds.

Djipi is working on the environments while I am working on the characters HUD and effects. I send my stuff to Djipi when I finish it, but Djipi keeps his files to himself at the moment, i dont need the tiles yet, I have more than enough to keep a grip on, so I show screens of the bits I do, and djipi shows shots of our combined work...

Yeah Djipi you're blowing me away. I really liked the Ocarina Pack, but I felt like there was some little things that might have been skipped over or rushed, but you and MDTauk are going over this game fantastically. I really like that you guys are doing the NPC faces like that.

Are there any pre-rendered backgrounds in MM like OoT? I really hope not. That's the worst part about OoT. (In terms of retexturing.)

The OoT cell pack was good considering how many texures needed to be covered, but ultimately I was disapointed with the overal quality. I really found it to be inconsistant, but this one looks consistantly good. I have high hopes for this one. Great work.:sombrero:

We have both agreed to try remake our own textures whenever possible. For my knights I re-drew the patterns and designs for use myself, so that is technically original, just looks like the Wind Waker one. We are deffinatly trying to take our Colour palletes from the game however...

The effect on the text is very nice and well rendered, but does this 3d-style really fit the game ?
Maybe a more flat style would be better - for example I loved the bosses' names in Celda OOT, flat and still coloured. The text you(?) made for the standard dialogs of this pack is quite flat too, and the shadow on letters gives a nice effect. So, why not more flatened letters for bosses' names ? Just my opinion, of course, you are doing an amazing job :)

Shhhhh! Isn't that supposed to be a secret? Ah, who cares anyways since you can do that in 1.6 too but it's called "adjust game aspect ratio to match yours". I just found out that you could do that in 1.6 btw. You guys should try it, it's kinda cool playing zelda in widescreen without the screen just getting stretched. Just set your screen res to something of the 16:9 ratio and put that option i mentioned on. Btw, i like your avatar skyman. That's penny arcade right? i havent been there in quite awhile, i think i'm gonna go check that out right now. Oh yeah, i didnt even say anything about the texture pack. Uhh...good job...i guess(didnt even look at it).

Ah so its a plugin option. Thats a shame, as that function would have to be included in Rice's plugin for it to work with the re-texture packs. Rice perhaps you could add this functionality, and perhaps find a code to move the hud elements to the edges of the screen, whether you have a widescreen monitor or not - black borders top and bottom in full screen on a 4:3 monitor.

I'm sure that ts_death_angel guy or whoever could make a code to move the hud to the edges when in widescreen with that option on. also, mdtauk, it seems your not a pj64 member, so i guess you dont know the new jabo's plugin 1.7 beta supports hi res textures. anyways, i thought they give free memberships to good texture artists? at least i think i was told that. i know djipi is a member. you should ask about getting a free membership so you guys can use the betas and make your textures for jabo's plugin too if you want.

EDIT: btw, i just looked through some of your guy's textures and they look pretty awesome, no complaints here!

Goron's dungeon (the entire mountain) is, with Ikana Canyon, one of the most beautiful places of the game. Well... for me the whole game got a GREAT art direction, with pretty sceneries and very well implemented surrealist ambient.

You guys are doing an incredible work. I do not post everytime you release some pics (obvius! :P) but I enter the thread everyday to see the WIP :D

I don't know if this could be of any help (I also don't remember if you alredy did the Termina Field map :blush:)
