WaveRace 64 Soft-Mod version 0.1
This is a hi-res replacement mod for Wave Race 64. Inspired by cel-shaded work, the goal of this mod is to give the game a softer, cartoon like feel. It is in my opinion that a realistic pack wouldn't work well with the game's low polygon count.
This pack is currently still in development, and is being released to help get feedback, and because with limited time to work on it I felt it's at a state I can release. This is why I am labeling this version 0.1, I will go to 1.0 once I have every texture included.
Textures that cannot be replaced:
These textures, for whatever reason, cannot be replaced by Rice's plug-in.
- Full Screen Start Screen Logo
- Opening N64 Logo
- Marine Fortress Sky
Known Missing Textures:
- Stunt Mode Point Numbers
- The word "Stunt" when completing a stunt
- 2nd Place rank during Stat scroll at end of championship
- 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place rank titles shown at end of race
- Time Up graphic (Well it's there, but the order is messed up)
- All riders and animals
Known Issues:
- Crowd in Sunny Beach not tiled at all
- Many of Drake Lake is not really done, that one hump is a place holder and the ground under the trees needs to be revised
I'm probably forgetting a ton of things on this list, but I rather just post this already instead of thinking about the specifics of the mod.
Pack available at http://www.emulation64.com/files/info/1041/

Thanks to make this new forum for your work :D
And explain stats of your work too ...
I like your work ;)
Do you think you will end it ?
The Dave
March 26th, 2006, 22:13
I promise I will have the game 100% retextured eventually. It's actually fairly close now, like 90% or more.
I really wish I could retexture the main logo, I would switch it out to the one in my sig. I got the textures for it, but I guess they're encrypted like the Zelda pre-rendered BGs.

I understand :D
I dont know this story of encrypted texture like in "Zelda pre-rendered BGs"
I think you can't do nothing, if the video pluggin not update this fonction, no ?
The Dave

The ability to replaces such textures may never be available.
So has anyone tried this? Anyone want to give feedback. That was the reason I released it. The game is almost fully textured, I thought you kids like that.

I'm afraid this game has a very small fanbase. For this same reason I stopped working on my Goemons Great Adventure pack, which has only had around 50 downloads to date.

I downloaded the pack not too long ago. Simply brilliant whole new feel to the game as I expected, the only thing that bothered me is the water effects...I mean they were better represented in-game than in the pictures obviously, but there might be better ways to create the effect your going for no? I couldnt even find the watter effects to test different methods so there no way I could know for sure, but I have ideas. I feel whatever comes next will be more of the same, and this is good. Finally a consistantly good pack is on its way to completion. Kids make up a good portion of the community, and not to say that their input isnt welcome, but I belive it needs to be constructive for the most part. Im just a kid at heart anyhow....:bouncy:

Kerber in this current pack ther is a folder called "Water" if you want to try your own hand at playing with the effect.

I don't mean to be a bother, but I've searched through the help threads and I have no idea what settings I should be using. I'm dying to try this pack, and it loads, but it's not working right. What are the recommended settings?
The Dave
March 31st, 2006, 02:20
Define, "loads, but it's not working right."
bridegur
March 31st, 2006, 02:59
Well, the textures all load correctly, but everything seems to be flickering, a lot of textures often overlap each other, and the sky goes black a lot. Any ideas?
By the way, despite the technical troubles, it looks like it's going to be perfect. Good job so far!

Okay, I figured it out, I needed to turn on the vertex clipper. All the textures look good now, but does anyone have any tips for speeding it up?
The Dave
April 1st, 2006, 02:30
Sadly no, I was wondering if there would ever be a way for rice to make a "run at 60fps) option in his plugin because wave race could definitely use the boost.

As I predicted, I won't be able to get any work started on this again until after May 10th. Then I'll touch-up Drake Lake, try and finish the Stunt Mode stuff, then take a break to get Hi-Res Central up and running, and then finish up the little things.

- Opening N64 Logo
...
I dont know if someone mention this or not but the opening n64 logo cant since it's not drawn by the plugin. It was a image in rom copied directly to the framebuffer by the cpu.
Just though I would FYI.

Hahahaha, yeah I'm back home and definitely using the rest of this week to relax. I'll probably start messing around with Drake Lake tomorrow, then after that it's going to be hard to get back into the groove of remembering what needs to be done and all that, but I think Stunt Mode HUD was my biggest to-do.
Hell, maybe I'll go after all the animals.

The Dave
May 24th, 2006, 06:44
Well I probably got myself involved in too many things.
I did do some work with this though, but nothing exciting. I'll give you examples of the non-exciting stuff I've been doing.
Image 1: New Rock Texture in Marine Fortress
Image 2: New texture for whatever that building is in Marine Fortress
Image 3: New texture for little island in Drake Lake
Image 4: New Rock Texture in Glacier Coast
Image 5: Fixed tiling of mountain bg in Drake Lake
Stupid stuff like this that tweaks the pack is what I'm going over now, so I can sort of ease myself into working with this mod again. It's hard to just jump right back in after taking months off and not remember where I was.

Looks great! Please keep up the good work!
BTW: Is it possible to improve the textures of the riders or are they made of polygons?
The Dave
May 26th, 2006, 08:02
The riders do have textures, but their blocky appearance is because of their low polygon count.
After I finish the coding for the Hi-Res dedicated website Vanit and I are working on, I will work on all the marine life in the game.

I downloaded this pack waverace is a good game, good work the dave.. but, i was geting slow downs. 30 fps, so i started puting textures in folder by folder. When i got to bouys my FPS drop bad.. so i del red yellow folders under bouys
And then game runs Great.
2.4ghz, 512 ram, GeForce 4 4200 with 8XAGP new drivers
The Dave
June 7th, 2006, 22:57
Are you saying the game went faster because of the way the textures were organized or because you eliminated them?
Maybe your video card can't handle all of it? I run it with no problems other than the naturally low framerate.
Noglory
June 8th, 2006, 00:04
no the bouys was making the game go slow. I deleted, Yellow and red bouys..and now the game runs Great! i get 60fps and no slow downs. all so zelda cell shade runs great no slow downs at all.. all my N64 games run Great with 60fps!
I use Project64 1.6..i test N64 games on all plugins and setings. I edit the notes to tell me what game plays best and what plugin and seting to play it on...

Extract the files to- "wherever you have your emulator\Plugin\hires_texture\WAVE RACE 64"
(D:\spel\Emulators\Nintendo 64\PJ641.6\Plugin\hires_texture\WAVE RACE 64 in my case)
and you should be good to go.

This is based upon PJ 1.6 cause that's the only one i have installed at the moment but you should be able to figure it out if you use 1964.
First you obviously need Rice's video plugin found here (http://www.emutalk.net/showthread.php?t=26442) and extract it to your plugin folder.
Next you need to select the plugin from the list in Options -> Settings -> Video (Graphics) plugin:
Select this... (http://www.emutalk.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=33883&stc=1&d=1157237732)
Press OK
Next go to Options -> Configure Graphics Plugin -> General Options:
Uncheck this... (http://www.emutalk.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=33885&stc=1&d=1157237732)
Press OK
And finally go to Options -> Configure Graphics Plugin -> Texture Filters:
And check this. (http://www.emutalk.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=33884&stc=1&d=1157237732)
That should do it if i haven't forgotten anything, Cheers

You're supposed to download "RiceVideo6.1.1beta10.rar (http://www.emutalk.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=23107&d=1111864029)", not the one with src at the end.
Download BMGlib.rar (http://www.emutalk.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=22952&d=1111591000) too (not sure where you're supposed to extract that but in plugins and main folder should do it, one of them is right ;P).

As far as I can recall from what I've read here on the forum, the official release date for 1.7 won't be announced. I may be wrong though.
I do know the 1.7 beta is available for a small price for registered users.
Hope that helps. =)
By the way, AWESOME job on the retexture!! It makes playing the game so much more exciting. Thanks man.

Hi All! Thanks for the kind words, whether or not it came out good I spent a lot of time on this, and at the least the whole UI is pretty much redone. Here's a link to the files I had, which I haven't used in years:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7JYX0MFH
Now some notes. When I did this pack I was somewhere in my 3rd year of college, and not that good. I'm now out of school and have been working as a full-time professional Web Designer / Developer and I would love to redo A LOT of this pack. The thing is since I work full time I just don't have the time. I think outside of the UI and Water mostly everything needs to be redone. It was just amateurish, and I think I can do it now, but I don't think I'll ever have the time.
So, well, one day maybe. That's all I can really say about it.
