The patch is out from Aeon Genesis, however I am not sure why the goes black when I try to begin a new game. Is this a bug in the patching?

According to the readme it sounds like the ROM has a header, use SNESTool to remove the header.

Oh and cheers for indicating the update at Aeon Genesis

If you're using ZSNES, try using v1.337. Or try another SNES emulator.
