Hi there!
I decided to stop this project.
I dont have time for this and I don't get that much help. Also, there seems to be another Majora's Mask retexturing project with realistic textures by Djipi, so it's not worth to keep on working.
For the ones, who liked my work or want my work for their Packs, I uploaded them to rapidshare.de.
http://rapidshare.de/files/7758942/MuhMuh_s_Majoras_Maskt_Retexture.rar.htm l
How to download & use:
1. Scroll down and press the "Free"-Button
2. Wait 26 seconds
3. Download the file
4. Extract the Rar-file and move the folder "ZELDA MAJORA'S MASK" to EMULATOR\plugin\hires_texture\
5. Load them with an Majoras Mask rom (I use Legend of Zelda 2, The - Majora's Mask (E) (M4)) and the latest Rice Video Plugin.
I hope you enjoy it, though it's not very well retextured and almost no area is complete.
:bouncy: :bye3:

HELP! I hate that guy!
Is it even possible for me to spend a completely "Sponge-Bob-free" day???
Even if he's not seen that much in Spain, I really loathe seeing him every summer in the USA!! Please! Get that face out of my view!!!! HE'S GONNA TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!!

Those textures look great, MuhMuh!
Majora's Mask already had some neat graphics, but looks like you're prepared to make this game look wonderful!
I wish you and Shibb good luck with this project.......possibly without Sponge-Bobs as enemies... :bunny:

i think you should use the orcarina of times bushes that keber made in feds topic....they look cleaner...less cabbage like lol...i think the majoras mask producers took a backwards step with this game...alehought the graphics look cleaner and more colourful...they lack the realism of oot,...that was so amazing back in 1998

yeah, i think this is an irelevancy, really. Since generally the idea is to stick close to the original, you should probably just try to make a sweet version of the original MM version. And Iwould venture to say that this looks much better than the original. Maybe play around with it a little, if you aren't satisfied yet.

May 11th, 2005, 06:59
Bushes in Zelda are really hard to do simply because you cant have that much information on the space given withen the leaves and such. I dunno about your stance on keeping the textures close to the original, but when I see the bush texture in zelda oot no matter how crappy the original looked it served its purpose as a bush. I assume the same applies for MM. Try visualizing how you want it to look before you start making it from scratch. If you use photoshop just use a diffrent layer and draw on top of the original to get a feel for what your going for. If it feels flat use tools to lighten and darken areas to make it feel realistic.

Is it just me or do the graphics in Majora's Mask look a lot better than the ones used in Ocarina of Time.
Toast Siege
May 12th, 2005, 04:15
That makes sense. Majora's Mask was one of the two games to require the N64 "Expansion Pak" which was really just an additional 4MB of RAM that you would need to insert into your console to play either Majora's Mask or Donkey Kong 64. This extra RAM allowed for things like higher screen resolution, and, certainly, textures that were greater in quality. Also, even though OoT and MM share the same engine, they were released two years apart, with MM coming out just a day before Playstation 2.

Try something like Garamond. A font with fine serifs.
Or try san-serif fonts like Verdana, Arial or Tahoma. Whichever letter looks best. ;)

This thread looks like it's slowed down a bit so here's a bit of a contribution:
My own attempts at retexturing the models have (for the most part) failed so I suppose I'll just stick with two-dimensional images for now (And I'll stay away from Clock Town!). I'll get on making a pack of all my (2D) work very soon, likely within a couple days...
Without further ado!
(Just in case you were wondering...the quiver is an original drawing, and feel free to criticize anything you see here. I do, however, realize that the bomb is far too small. Its 'shadow' is not a texture and can't be altered through simple reinserting of images.)
To MuhMuh - I don't mean to hijack this thread in any way. Keep it up, but please, stay far away from Spongebob in the future, for your own good.
Hmm, that was lots more 'ado...' Well,
Can you spot the difference?

Hah, it's very ironic you mentioned that, because almost all of the things you mentioned there I have already done. Actually, I've done most of the items (the official art that you seem to have also found), and some of the drop shadows. I see, however, that you're using that one Kokiri Sword. I didn't really like it so much, and I altered it to make it look more like the 3D sword Link carries around (you may have noticed the heavy jpeg compression, the blade is very blue, among others...) Also I've made an alternate rupee icon - in the lower left - you're using the icon from Wind Waker, aren't you? Anyways, we can decide about that later. Here's a list of things I've already done in terms of retexturing:
-Fairy's Wings texture
-bottom of screen Clock -> the lines that are arranged in a half-circle...you'll see.
-bottom of screen Clock -> the 'diamond' that appears behind the '1st,' '2nd,' 'Final,' images (although it looks like yours says '1.' European version?
-all of the black "Dawn" screens
-Quiver and Kokiri sword icon (in Quest Status subscreen)
-some of the subscreen window backgrounds (not done)
-the square in the Items and Masks subscreen that indicates what you're using
-all of the items that fall to the ground that are dropped by enemies (bombs, arrows, potion)
Actually, there are a few things else that I don't seem to remember.
Anyway, here are the two pieces of the clock that I've done so far.

hmm. The original text doesn't seem to have had *any* serrifs, v-king. At least from what I see in that pic. The font is decent, but if you could find one that's similar to what you've chosen, but still has the angled cut to the arms... look at the pics you posted to see what I mean. It would just keep it a little more true to the original.

The German alphabet uses the same letters as the English one. It appears that he's working on the European version, so it will just be a matter of renaming the right letters to fit the USA version. Actually, the English font looks done from that above shot (strange font notwithstanding).
The HUD is mostly done, and right now I'm working on the heart meter (there are 10 different frames for this, because when you get the half-damage upgrade, the heart gets a white border and changes to a different image), so I guess I'll post some progress shots tonight...

Hah, well, it's two days later and no one still seems to notice this thread... MuhMuh, I guess we should get with the releasing of our first pack soon. Until then, though, I'll just post these before and after shots of... well, one scene. (it's substancial though, I promise! More later.)
While this shot is quite recent, there has been additional work on the HUD since this point, and of course, I'm continuing to improve things in concentrated places (for now I'm focusing on the subscreen and the HUD), and I do believe MuhMuh is "finished" with Clock Town. If anyone notices little things like our textures not matching each other, it's likely because it's extemely difficult to contact one another, and we are forced to do almost everything by either e-mail or PMs (damn time zones)... Hopefully this will soon change, but at the moment it is certainly complicating things.
One thing I'd like to add is that we are both entirely serious about this project, lame jokes notwithstanding. The last post I made was from a test, in other words, yes those are real textures, and no I of course do not plan on including them in any of our releases.
So, on to the pictures...
What to look for in the after shot:
rupee; heart meter; sad deku eyes; context button; c-items number font; the items at c-left and c-right; magic meter (that was a test, will definately change); certain parts of the onscreen clock
Nearly everything you can see here is a work-in-progress, so if you don't like something, say so! ...Or else. (Stangely, the after shot has a lower file size than the before)

the clock parts are sexy. One thing about the Deku eyes is that they stand out a bit too much... perhaps some minor softening around the edges, or soemthing like that? They just look a tiny bit TOO stand-outish... perhaps they don't look round enough, or maybe something else... they just seem a little too much like disembodied textures, floating in an abyss of the head. Oh yeah, the c-button stuff looks sweet, man.

Well, there are minor white borders, as previously mentioned. And the mask, I personally think could be much more hi-rez. As it is, it looks like a 3d model ripped from the game, and the n64 wasn't really pushing the hottest polys. I think there surely must be a better illustration somewhere available for you to add in. The white borders are minor, but I mean, if you want it to be a final, instead of a WIP, those are my suggestions.
Googol
May 20th, 2005, 03:39
It doesn't look ANYTHING like a 3d model ripped from the game. You would be able to see the polygons, and the texture would be really blocky. No, this is from the official art of the game, and is no way lo-res.

I also think that the mask looks a little much like a jpeg or a bad magazine scan (the colours bleed a little), and it could even be more evident at higher resolutions. The letters look pretty good so far, but again, we can't judge how it looks at a resolution of around 1280x960 (where you would be able to see the image's entire detail). As it looks now though, nice work.
ragnor
May 20th, 2005, 07:56
hmm. I was trippin balls. The spikes look bad because of the borders (as stated previously). I was just whining about the aliasing. No, it's not lo-rez, but it's not perfect either. Just helpin with a critique... which has basically boiled down to what Fed said. Shrug.

Hah, sorry about that, but I swear if this project ever dies, the first thing we'll do is post about it here. In other words, no news is good news, eh? (it's not gonna die, if anyone's really worried)
Anyways, the item screen is basically done here (if you'll notice the magical arrows have no shadow, the explanation for that is that the shadows are done, but I have to switch between two computers often and some of my work isn't always on hand when I have to take progress shots). I made sure to make the drop shadows consistent and everything like that, and the grey-ed out items (like the powder keg you can see here) are all done as well. Also, the bottles aren't really done either (and there are like 10 or so variants - milk, 1/2 milk, big poe, mushroom... etc.) Lastly, I will direct your attention to the images used for the C-buttons - I redid these to get a more 'processed' look.
I assume MuhMuh is still absent and unable to give any sort of update, so, you'll just have to do with this.
EDIT: There are actually 18 different bottles, by my count.

-every action 'word,' top-right: "every" as far as I know, but I guess there are around 34 used in each language version, including the deku link water-skipping-numbers.
-certain other miscellany in the onscreen clock, bottom-center.
-razor sword, top-right: only the icon, mind you.
What's left to do in the HUD:
-all of the maps: though you can just press L to get rid of their unsightly low resolution-ness for now
-the last parts of the onscreen clock: and in multiple languages!
-the last few sword icons: including the fierce deity's sword and the kokiri sword which I need to fix up some more
-the remaining action words (if any): but for sure in other languages, as well
-magic meter: any suggestions? I'll do something with this...
I am not planning on releasing anything until MuhMuh comes back. However, if he's died in some horrible plane crash... hmm, maybe I'll give it a few more days.

Great project, I love your work. But I don't like the fonts you're using, they are not original. The outlines of the hearts and the magic bar (don't know if it's called like this) are too thin.

May 30th, 2005, 12:45
ht hears are ok but the magic bar is indeed a bit to thin and yes the "action-word" font seems not appropriate just like the counting number for arrows..
the rest looking very good so far!

I'm back! XD So I can finish the last area of clocktown and maybe do the intro or the inside. But i dont have much time ,because I have a lot of work for school...
@Toast Siege
Please make the lines bigger and have you allready remade the standart hearts(the ones you got from start)? And can you maybe modify the original action-words? That would be more work, but it would fit better. But for now, your work is great! :D I hope we will meet in msn...

About fonts:
The item counter numeric font is exactly the same as the original. After resizing the numbers, however, I changed the alpha so that the black outline was only one pixel wide (rather than four). I don't know what your standards for 'original' are, but our goal is to not stray too far from the textures that were there in the first place. I left the font otherwise as-is because I wasn't sure what I should do with it (plus, I think it looks just fine; I may end up changing it though).
The action words are also lightly edited, but in a way that looks very unlike the actual font I used. Also, the dimensions are exactly the same as the game's originals, in case you could not tell. I guess I'll try 'crushing' some of the letters to make it look closer to the game's original.
MuhMuh: Yes, all the hearts are completely done, and I've attached a before-after to this post. (When you say make lines bigger, do you mean the seperating line showing what fraction of a heart you have left?)
About action words, I think that editing the originals would be entirely far too much work, especially considering the other languages (remember there are about 30 in each language) and the fact that one person would have to do all of them to achieve consistency, not to mention the that it would be impossible to consistently redo each word by hand, and there's the little matter of: who knows how they would turn out anyway.
One thing you have to take into account is how would the artist draw this image if he had the constraints of, say a 192x64 image rather than a 48x16 image to write little words in. I'd say, that it would be rather hard to use an bitmap editor to put in text and change it in a certain way. They probably did something like wrote out these 'words' on paper and scanned them to be put into their game. At this much higher resolution, we don't have that limitation, and can pretty much do it in any style we want.
I do realize that some of you think this is an issue of staying with the look of the original images, I support this idea generally myself, but you have to be reasonable...
However I will try some things and see what I can do.
The attached images weren't taken at 1280x960, unfortunately.

I kinda like the thinner outline, but I guess that's just me. I kinda thought the thick outline was a poor design decision originally, makes the game feel a little more kiddy than its actual content is.

people? updates please? or at least a pack...
COME ON!!
Toast Siege
June 9th, 2005, 09:48
Here's a short summary of my situation: MuhMuh doesn't read his email (which incidentally is our sole means of communication). I guess it's getting to be time for another money shot, however...
But first! Some kind of explanation regarding the lack of a texture package: Well, hmm, I... er, yeah... There's the fact that I haven't really seen a single texture MuhMuh has made, so far... It's really killing this thread fast and good, though. I can release something within a couple days (for real, this time) but maybe not everything.
About this picture,
When I looked at it, the proportions for the dropped items looked a little off, so I added handy insets showing a before/after comparison of a few of the newer things in here, but without posting two 1280x960 images! So, they're there mainly to show the dimensions being just about the same. I'm pretty sure I have all of them done, except for that damn Deku Nut - that one isn't easy. The problem here is that I've decided to use seperate images for the item screen items and the drop items, so it'll be done when it's done... The last parts of the clock are the only thing left for the HUD, really (exluding all the maps). All my attempts at redoing those little sun and moon pictures have ended in failure. When they're not so horribly blurry, the pictures look too big and bright... Oh well, but if anyone has any suggestions about what the sun's 'face' should look like, please tell me here. I think it sort of looks like the Super-Mushroom's 'eyes,' but that's just me. Enjoy!
For now...
P.S. Ack! I just now realized it had been almost 10 days since the last update. Sorry, I've been kind of busy. MuhMuh, you could be putting more effort into keeping this thread alive, you know.

I don't want this project to die, i just don't have time for it...

One thing I would say, is that the patterns on the walls seem to stand out too much. You need to remember the patterns are mud or some kind of natural dye but the material is still brick, stone and mud.
The texture should be brick etc, with very faint discolouration to make the patterns...

http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/2555/smask428yo.th.jpg (http://img97.imageshack.us/my.php?image=smask428yo.jpg)hmmm that one looks good, but i've got to say, I still see a original texture up there (in the upper top)... also it doesn't look that "realistical" not that I mind... it's just that looking at the HUD icons (that I love) it doesn't really match with the "finish", just a opinion.
Kepp going :D

I think I know what texture you are talking about. I have already made new ones. And you can see mdtauk's great HUD (although it's not finished) on this Screenshot.

I see... it's very improved now, and the blurry texture is not there anymore... I love that HUD  I see that the hour system is being revamped, that "sun" icon looks really ace and the "1." is nicely done.
thanks for the hard work :D

Love it!

Ok, just to make sure, the first page is the download, right? Anyway, judgeing by the screenshots, awesome, awesome, awesome work! I hope that you eventually finish all of it. If you need me to, I can work on sharpening images, or other things. I've got CS2, if you'll give me the textures that you want changed. If you need my email, PM me.

Hi MuhMuh. I love what you've done with Majora's mask. I've never played this game before and I've been waiting for a high res texture pack to be released before I get started.
Is there any chance you could re-upload this pack? The link on the first post seems long dead.

the look more weird thank before imo...
Maybe a more cartoony face with the same head size as the original would look better?
Glad this project is not dead

Yes ! I can't tell you how happy I am to see this project still alive ! :D
And nice screenshot, by the way - but aren't the colours of the clock a bit too different from the original (http://hyrulerealm.guardianarchives.com/Official/MM/ClockTown.jpg) ? If that's your style, it'll be great, but if you want some constructive (I hope) criticism, you have my opinion :)

Sorry, that is not possible, or it would at least look extremly retarded. But I still think mine look better than the original ones.
