that's incredible work.. something i don't think many had not thought of at all..
to me tho it feels like it would be nice if maybe someone looked into a filter of some sort or a fix of some sort to make an emulator render the whole image in cell-shaded format.. because that i know of it's very possible to do using DirectX..
then maybe you wouldn't have to redo all the textures.. and also you would get alot more acurate cell-shaded shadows etc..

it won't be possible, the only parts where Mario is textured are the eyes and his "M". the rest of the model is simple color. unless you hack the model itself, you prolly won't see that, same for peach , lakitu and yoshi. Toad and Bowser might be possible tho.

All I have to say about the cel shaded Mario and Zelda is OMG!! That looks so sweet especially the Mario and Koopa Troopa, Link doesn't look too bad cel shaded either, I actually didn't mind the cel shading in Wind Waker. Orkin do you have the retexture pack for the cel shaded Mario and Link? Not to go off track from Mario cel shaded but I think WWF No Mercy cel shaded would be kind cool as well.

xenSity
April 5th, 2005, 16:48
Looks like a cool effect that's worth exploring.
I'm sure adding contour lines would be possible, but would require true cel-shading code.
PS2.0 could probably do it, but I'm not an expert on that.
Some of the ATi Smartshader effects do similar things, which you can load through the new Control Center. The "sketch" effect comes to mind. I could be way off though.
They did allow people at one point to create and load custom pixel shader code, which was then applied to any D3D or OGL app like the preinstalled ones. The program is no longer supported, however. Oh well.
Keep up the good work. It's very encouraging.
Orkin
April 5th, 2005, 17:01
I'm thinking about doing it through a post-process effect described in a paper by ATI. It involves drawing normals and depth to a secondary render target, and then, after the entire scene has been drawn, run a pixel shader over it that looks for changes in normal and depth to tell where a line should be.
It's not the fastest method in the world, but the plugin doesn't have complete access to model information, so other methods aren't really practical....
xenSity
April 5th, 2005, 17:42
That does sound like a logical way to start. It's far beyond my level.
The existing sketch effects use edge detection in the PS code; The sobel algorithm.
It's probably not complicated enough to produce the desired effect for cel-shading.
I'm just a beginner (and probably sound like it), but I might try experimenting.
Good luck with your experiment too. I'm sure you'll produce some great results.

WoW!
Those cell shaded models look great!
I wouldn't mind having OoT in cell shading, I liked the art style in Wind Waker for a little change.
It'd be cool if you did as Miyamoto is currently planning the Zelda series to be. He said:
"In Wind Waker we wanted to make the world brighter so it would look as if it was seen through the eyes of a little boy (Link in this case). We decided the new Gamecube Zelda game should use more realistic graphics because this time it was adult Link who was in it."
So that would be...like having cell-shaded textures and models for young link, and realistic textures for adult link!!!
Ok, maybe it wasn't such a good idea... I suppose most of you will dislike the cell-shaded graphics, won't you?

I worked for a little while with Cel-shading, I made a version of Quake 2 that was cel shaded. I to had problems with the weighted lines around the models but I do just about remember the idea behind them. If I remember when working with the model you check for lines that that a front facing polygon and a back facing polygon, if so draw a line.

Kid A is cell shading through changing textures
Orkin is cell shading by using a pixel-shader in his plugin
You'll need to wait till Orkin releases an update to his plugin that supports texture replacement before you could combine things.

hires is definitely the coolest feature i can think of. I wonder if it would be possible to make a loader for audiofiles into audioplugins like schibo's or azimer's... Sound-plugs' dev seem a bit too inactive, but wouldn't it be great? :plain:
http://www.emutalk.net/high-resolution-textures-projects/29577-help-thread-djipis-also-federellis-packs.html
First you need Rice's video plugin that can be found HERE (beta 10 & BMGlib)
If you are using project64 or 1964 emus then you need to make a folder in the main emu folders, plugin folder (now i see why someone hasn't explained this lol) called hires_texture and in that one, another called, The Legend of Zelda.
IE:
C:\Program Files\Project64 1.6\Plugin\hires_texture\The Legend of Zelda
For world textures like the early release of Kokiri Forest u need to add the Kokiri Forest folder to a folder in the legend of Zelda folder named WORLD TEXTURES
IE:
C:\Program Files\Project64 1.6\Plugin\hires_texture\The Legend of Zelda\World Textures\Kokiri Forest
Also in this folder you can place other locations like Fire Temple and Hyrule Castle.....
HUD textures go in a folder in the main, "The Legend of Zelda" folder called HUD
IE
C:\Program Files\Project64 1.6\Plugin\hires_texture\The Legend of Zelda\HUD
This is talking about Zelda, but other games will work too.

So, like, how far is this along? Is there an ETA on it's completion? I'm REALLY looking forward to it...

Cel shading is appealing, except textures which spread a wide area, like fields which just look like a block of green usually =/

Is this project still alive? I was really liking it so far.

I hate it when people ask that question....I know, it´s been a month, but you got to remember that they have a life outside this project, so you can´t ecpect them to upload everyday, or once a week. Look at pj64, it took 2 1/2 year before 1.6 was finished. You just have to be patient. It si NOT dead until they say it´s dead.

ok here is the Long Answer:
There was a member on these forums called Orkin, who was working on a special plugin which made cel-shading possible on the N64 emulator.
Since around November December, last year, he has practically vanished and so we all now asume his project is dead and done with.
Its a real shame, but that is the way of things. He didnt make his source code public so there is no real chance of someone else working on it...
