Sony revealed more information about the PSP today:

"PSP features an integrated high output lithium-ion battery that provides a play time of between 4 and 6 hours for game titles and continuous 4 to 5 hours for video viewing."

The unit will cost $185 in Japan and will be released on December 12th.

It's a bit cheaper than I had expected, considering that the DS will retail in the US at $149. As the $185 price is in Japan, it could be more expensive when it comes to the US coming spring, but I doubt it.

Also even another FF7 spinfoff was announced today for the PSP:

I myself think I will get a DS. There are simply not enough games for the PSP that I am interested in. Besides, I only got a normal GBA so I could need one with backlight. Also, from what I have seen until now the games are quite similar to the PS2 console games, and I am not really looking for playing portable console games. Last, the media part doesn't interest me one bit unless you can burn your own UMDs, which I am quite sure wont happen. I would only scratch it way too much using it as a mp3 player anyways.

However, I am sure it is a perfect handheld for some people and it's really good looking, that's for sure.

As for the Final Fantasy game, I am not really that excited. For some reason I think SquareEnix is starting to "lose it", their games are only getting worse and worse. Of course their games aren't bad, but nothing spectacular even. There's no need to flame me, it won't help :P
A new Secret of mana would be nice though, and I heard there is one in the works for DS. I enjoyed Sword of Mana for the GBA, if it just wasn't for the american slang (I understand it, but I dont like it) ;)

well im positively suprised by the final price tag and we all knew it looks damn slick and has compelling features...however that battery life is pretty pitiful. still a 40% chance of me getting one.

The PSP got only a battery lifetime of 4-6 hours ? Then the name makes no sense to me . ( "Pocket" playstation ?! no way ! ) They should make an own rechargeable device for the PSP , like on a laptop . I won't buy a PSP just for playing about 4-6 hours and then buying new batteries/or reload them ! No way , I won't buy it .

/edit : Oops , it got an integrated rechargable battery... I should read closer... but the lifetime is still pathetic !

IMO there's no game that nullifies that Drawback .

I dont think its that bad by having four-six hours of battery on it. I mean I'd probably get one,but i wouldnt play it for more than an hour and a half....then I would recharge it most likely. I am happy about the price...I thought it would be way more costly :)

That's 4-6 hours IF:

These numbers, according to SCE, were determined with the system's luminance set to maximum (180 cd/m2) and minimum (80 cd/m2), volume set to half the maximum level, headphones used instead of speakers and wireless LAN not in use.

Does not sound good.

I think 4-6 hours is just enough, I mean how many people are gonna be playing a game for more than than without being near a electric socket. I am definately gonna get one when it is released in the U.S.

Four to five hours... So, it's a Game Gear then? ;)
EDIT: Um, don't lith-ion batteries also have an overall lifespan issue like those in laptops..?

Tscchh... I might, if I get one. The portables are meant to be played anywhere, anytime.
Still, you can use your own rechargeable batteries. Handy, those.

Generally you'll get a much shorter effective use time out of rechargeables though.

Indeed. I didn't say I liked the system. It does indeed have flaws.
Luckily I usually carry around lots of them batteries. I have in total, 10 of them! :P

At least you won't look like a 5-year-old with a DS.

If I must buy a handheld, the PSP is the one for me. It does look rather sexy.

Hmm? How does having a Nintendo console or handheld make you look like a 5 year old? I don't see it. I mean, Sony and Microsoft may be aiming at a older group of gamers with their consoles and whatnot, but Nintendo still has the gaming feel it had several years in the past, with a bit more imagination. The PSP does look very nice, as did the Ps2. But, I find Nintendo finds ways to out-do the competetors by using their imaginations; not pure technology.

Myself? I think I'm going to get a DS. I want something to use on the go, that's what I want in a handheld. Not a freakin' DVD player or whatever the PSP has; although the PSP is cheap if it does have that. XD

Question; Won't media files/movies have to be on UMD to be watched..? Maybe I've gotten lost along the way but I thought UMD's were supposed to be rather small, and that thing doesn't look like a DVD fits in it.
*Confused*

Because Nintendo doesn't want to be a company for anybody other than a bunch of 5 year olds.

Oh come on. Nintendo have always aimed at the younger market. Sony were the first people to make gaming 'cool' for twentysomethings.

Well you are only 14. ;)

Fuck it, I'm buying an N-Gage.

So WHAT?! Nintendo still makes great games! And now there comes more titles such as resident evil to the cube. You don't look like a 5-year old just because you get a ds.

That is a pretty terrible battery life, but battery technology sucks anyway. Get ready for power outages when some kid plugs his psp into the wall.

Hooray to Ninty for securing a line of mediocre survival horror games (pardon me RE fans, but RE does love the wang, and you know that) for the Cube!
Anyway, four to five hours sounds reasonable to me. Handheld consoles are made for bus and train trips, I doubt there are many people out there who drive to work for more than four hours every day.

i also hope that these people won't be playing a handheld while driving

secondly, the DS looks like any normal handheld... the gamecube may look like a child's toy, but DS? wtf? it kinda looks better than the PSP imo... psp is almost TOO slick. the way it's designed, you'll practically have to hold it horizontally, looking down at it. i'd rather the privacy of a fliptop.

regardless, even if you use a laptop to play games on the subway, people will look at you funny. i don't think either the PSP or DS would put you better off.

I see no point in buying either the DS or the PSP until there are some games avaliable for them that I'd like to play.

That's a good point ! The games are making about 85% of a console's success. If the ff-7 port to the PSP gets renewed Modes or some extra Maps/bosses/side stories , there is even a chance i would buy a PSP !

How about 100% of a console's success? Why would you buy a console if not for the games?

October 30th, 2004, 21:29
i think nintendo will vouch for that statement...and the n64 proves it. i suppose in case of the ds and the psp both consoles have potential for high 3rd party support though. personally what always kept me from buying a sony console was that, except for a few titles, the game lineup never appealed to me.

Surprisingly a good question. And one that certainly warrants answering. The PS2 sold because it was a Playstation. Just like the way the fan-boys are lapping up the DS because it's a Nintendo.

Consumer loyalty (in any market) is higher than you'd think.
