I have created a bootable cd image using exoskeletor's program but when i load the game , it takes me to the screen with play, memcards , settings , music icons and when i click on play the bios just keeps resetting itself every time
i have the required dc_flash.bin and dc_bios.bin , so why does this happen ?

I have the european bios (spanish and pal version and also the US version) but it still doesnt work

Then it must be a problem of the selfbooting program.

There is a lot of confusion . which program should i use to convert my dreamcast game (Resident evil code veronica which is non bootable ) into bootable ?

PsyMan

But RE: Code veronica is selfbootable... Try to use the xxx CD-ROM interface.
Also make sure to replace the bios files with bios files that were not used by the emulator and that they are not "read only".

No it isnt working even though i used the cd-rom xxx interface. do we have to use self bootable virtual images or CDs that contain bootable images ?can the chankast actually read cds from the cd or dvd drive

PsyMan

Yes it can read them but the emulation speed will be slower than normal. Try to make a selfbootable CD with exoskeletor's program.

and where do i download that exoboot program
Exoskeletor has created so many different versions in his posts , how do i know which one to use ?

MAD_BOY

Darkice

why dont u provide me with a link to that download ?

MAD_BOY
August 13th, 2004, 20:31
cause i don't need it and the topic is just a few topics under this one, and i allready use a different thingy to mke games bootable (don't ask me where to download, cause i have no idea where i got it from)

but the real question is why does chankast read these so called self bootable images by exoboot ,dirboot and fastboot as audio cds by displaying the dreamcast logo and its menu screen with the play , music, memory card and settings

there is ONLY ONE possibility to arrive at this screen... YOU HAVE NO CD INSERTED IN THE SELECTED DRIVE !!!

and there is only 3 possible case for that...
1. idiot category : the correct drive is not selected
2. stupid guy category : the cd is really not inserted
3. complete moron category : you are try to use a gdrom, and gdroms can't be recognized on your cd/dvd drive...

so, what is your category ???

do we really have to insert the dreamcast cd in the drive ?

Exoskeletor said that virtual cd images inserted in virtual drives is enough to run the game

Exoskeletor said that virtual cd images inserted in virtual drives is enough to run the game
yes, but you have to select this drive ! and if you have selected this drive you can't have the bios screen (just the dreamcast audio cd screen, in the worst case)...

which drive are u talking about when u said "this drive " ?
My DVD-ROM drive or the virtual cd drive

My DVD-ROM drive or the virtual cd drive
if you have mounted a cd image in your virtual drive you have to select this drive (virtual drive) in chankast menu...

omg...
games are generally made by developement kit in console... for the case of the dreamcast the devs team used the "katana dev kit" (the sega one), or a "wince based dev kit", so forget about wince stuff !!! anyway, wince based games don't work for the moment with chankast !!! and RE code veronica is not a wince based game !!!

anyway, wince games and dummy files are not your businness now !!! since you are unable to correctly boot to an app/game, those stuff are secondary !!! you have to BOOT to an app/game before take care about that, AND IT'S NOT YOUR CASE !!! you are still blocked in the dreamcast bios screen !!! and you shouldn't !!! even with a wince based game, or a missing dummy file, you should boot an app/game... so solve your booting problem before every thing !!!

and don't tell me it's exactly what you did, because it's wrong !!! psyman told you about corrupted bios, you said you have a good one !!! so, now to arrive at the screen you constantly have, there is only ONE POSSIBILITY ! YOU HAVEN'T ANY CD INSERTED IN THE SELECTED DRIVE !!! since we can't do this for you, SOLVE THIS PROBLEM !!!

Yes, i have inserted the virtual cd into correct virtual drive
Please dont be angry, nightmare .
Please tell me which booting program to use (exoboot, dir2boot,fastboot) and what format should the final cd image file be in (.cdi , .bin, .iso, nrg) in order to be recognised by chankast
what should the data folder in the booting program contain (a 1st_read.bin IP.BIN file and whatelse )

Nightmare

Please tell me which booting program to use...
all right... so i'm calm... until the next time (no doubt on that)...
so we're starting from the beginning
1. you must have chankast, dc_bios.bin and dc_flash.bin in the same directory...
2. you have to be sure your bios is not corrupted, a corrupted bios will always ask you to enter the clock values...
3. right click on dc_bios.bin and in properties you unset "read only", you do the same for dc_flash.bin, then you launch chankast, click start (no cd is inserted here yet) you enter the bios, and here you make the change for your language (it's spanish but maybe you want another language) without changing the clock values.
then you return to set "read only" on dc_bios.bin and dc_fash.bin
4. now you need an cd image of the game you want to use, a cd backup from the net (don't ask a link !), or a rip you have made from a gdrom (don't ask how to do that !).
so you have this cd image, daemon tools 3.29 allow you to use .cdi file, daemon tools 3.46 allow you to use .cdi and .nrg (until it's not a 6.x nero cd image)... but daemon tools 3.29 has the advantage to avoid lot of IO control error... you have to make a choice here...
5. you mount your image with daemon tools using the tray icon (icons near the clock in the windows task bar), you launch chankast and you select the virtual drive...
6. here 2 possibility, your image is selfbootable and the game start automatically, or the game is not selfbootable and the dreamcast automatically recognise it like an audio cd...
in the case where your game is not bootable, you have the possibility to make it bootable by using a selfboot program like fastboot, make selfboot, selfboot, dc-cdr, dir2boot, bin2boot, etc... (here you can use a lot of them, or you can use exoskeletor's GUI, lot of this tools are included)

do that...

Thanks for the help , nightmare.
I have already done everything u said but why do we have to unset read only for the dc_bios.bin and dc_flash.bin and also set it later.
Thats the only think i have not done so far.
Even after i used the exoboot program to convert non bootable disc resident evil code veronica into bootable , chankast still reads the disc as an audio disc , what is the reason for that ?

PsyMan

Can you use the utopia boot disk? (Does it boot?)

Darkice
August 14th, 2004, 22:35
of course it does . But what does the boot screen of the utopia disc in chankast show ?

Nightmare

why do we have to unset read only for the dc_bios.bin and dc_flash.bin and also set it later.?
it's aloww you to change the language in the bios (clock section), it's important because the language used by games is defined by the bios, and by doing this you don't have to always change the language... (of course you don't have to do this if you are spanish...)

Even after i used the exoboot program to convert non bootable disc resident evil code veronica into bootable , chankast still reads the disc as an audio disc , what is the reason for that ?
then there is something wrong in the selfboot process, the exoboot gui is still under development and is not 100% effective, with exoboot you can try with "burning cd" option (on a cd-rw) because it doesn't use entirely the same selfboot process, or try another selfboot program, or use the utopia boot disc but it doesn't work with all games...
