Release Slated For 7/12/04
From Snail: July 11, 2004

Wow, who could have known when I was asked to start work on this project,
that it would have such an impact?
Appearntly everyone but me :D

In the first week of its unpublished release,
my WinXP version of GiriGiri went global!
Litteraly tens of thousands of copies were downloaded!
It was so furious in fact that I nearly lost my ISP due to bandwidth use.

Well, having learned from that, having done more work, and having made
some preperations this time around, I am proud to announce, a new release.

Whats new:

01. This project is now called "Cassini".
02. Decrypted ALL of the coding.
03. Decompiled and added the source codes to the package.
04. More translation.
05. Removed the BIOS.
06. Thanks to work by MiC, updated the FrontEnd.
07. More performance improvements.
08. Updated the games.dat compatability list.
09. Updated the "Complete" games list.
10. Added HELP support.
11. Set up download sites.

The newly formed "Team Cassini" consists of:

Barnito - Advertising, Hosting, Distribution
Lockshaw13 - lists and compatability
Slacker - lists and compatability
Iceman50 - resource acquisitions
SigmaX6, DWBrett - Beta testing
Snail - Coding

Edited by vamp: link removed for now, if further information required please contact myself, or preferably keith since im too lazy to do anything.

Cool. an open source saturn emulator.

It's a hacked version of the girigiri saturn emulator used by sega in it's recently closed Sega B club service. Hopefully, it truely is abandonware so all the Cassini team can do this without fear of legal issues.

eh.. I retract what I said, I will be waiting for you to actually get in touch with sega's legal department and get them to make the giri giri project public domain, until then cassini is neither open source nor legal.

during installation it doesn't make me change the installation directory, when finished the emulator is in the program files directory but the shortcut links point to the directory italian (I'm italian) c:\windows\menu avvio\programmi

the program files directory where is the emulator is created apposite for cassini, my program files directory is c:\windows\programmi

surely the non working joypad is fault of this discrepancy

ok, I found a solution, edited manually the user.ini and paste/copy the joypads config data from older snails girigiri usere.ini

Barnito quick question. Im at work so I cant test it out. Any chance this new release would bring a resolution to my problem from the previous thread.

(The binding of certain keys that have system functions like key 0 and 5 etc)

If your not sure no biggie im gonna check it out when I get off work I just figured I would ask since I dont get out of here for another 6+ hrs

umm may i point peoples attention to this.

Taken from Emufanatics:

quad best known for VOOT (Virtual On:Oratorio Tangram for the Dreamcast) has given me permission to post his comments regarding this matter. He has dealt with Sega's legal department in the past and has the experience and knowledge to provide us with some great information regarding this situation.

(IRC Comments)

quad: That is so severely illegal.
quad: Japanese copyright law is even harsher than US in that regard.
quad: I should know, I dealed with it on np-voot.
quad: I've already dealed with Sega's legal department before. (via Hitmaker and then Activision's.)
quad: Ok, here is the plain basic facts:
quad: Both Japanese and US copyright law, as well as best practices pushed by WIPO, make the re-distribution of the disassembled sources illegal.
quad: Furthermore, regardless of GiriGiri's abandonware status, without a specific contract licensing the intellectual property or without a notarized and registered release into the public domain, distribution of the original or any derivative works is illegal.
quad: As GiriGiri was not released in the United States, legal contact would need to be made with Sega of Japan. (Sammy owns the company, but the legal department is what matters.)
quad: Sega of America and Sega Corp. International are not the copyright owners and would have no legal powers.
quad: Note: Sega does not need to renew their rights.
quad: The Berne Convention (and GATT), which Japan is a signatory of, places the rights for 75 years from publication or 100 years from creation - whichever is shorter.
quad: I've written many papers on Copyright law.
quad: It's a personal interest.
quad: As for how Sega works, legally, I dealed with them on np-voot.
quad: Because VOOT's copyright is owned by Activision in the US, I ended up recieving permission from them to continue.
quad: The program is illegal in Japan, definitely.
quad: But, SoJ and Hitmaker's legal both were made aware of the software and e-mailed noting no action would be taken.
quad: So it's in a grey area there.

Thanks for the great information quad.

Hm... has anyone noticed that there is a new Version of Cassini? Version 2.0. Cant find the changes on this one. If you download it then the file is named "cassini_lite.exe". Anyone has any information on this release?
