How is mapper converting possible?

I've quite a few roms in my collection of NES roms that have had their mappers changed. How is this possible, could this be a work around to some of the un-supported mappers?

People long ago use to disassemble roms and change their mapper writes and header so NESticle would run it, not how much that helps or confuses, I highly doubt anyone cares enough to do that today.

ok, thx for the info. if it was a matter of changing a few values around it would be worth it :p

VirtuaNES has a header editor that allows you to change the mapper number, mirroring etc. It fixed one of my roms that had a mirroring problem. :)
