Exoskeletor GUI for Selfboot
Create selfbootable games for your Dreamcast
I have create a GUI for selfboot by franxis. download it here: http://homepages.pathfinder.gr/Exoskeletor/Selfboot%20GUI%20by%20Exoskeletor.exe (if someone has better server please upload it :) )
It is in a self extracking archive and it will create a shortcut in the desktop
i will see if i can add an option to create an image without burning it but it's difficult.for now buy a rewritable cd :D
If you have problems read readme.txt and try again
I hope this tool helps you
CHECK IN THE LATEST PAGES FOR THE LATEST VERSION OF EXOBOOT. For now, the latest is located in this page: http://www.emutalk.net/showthread.php?t=21680&page=26&highlight=Exoboot

please LyonHrt download version 1,1 again because the program has a bug when you select to create both image and burn a cd. (remember:in order to play the image you have to use Daemon Tools V3.29
If you don't have Daemon Tools V3.29 get it here:
http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/por...ategory&catid=8 )
As the friend ChAnkA_RuLz says..
the problem is that i can't install dtools 3,29 (language problems) so i cant test my images.can someone check this version for me? (someone who have successfully made working images with fastboot/quickboot)
KyJelly
June 29th, 2004, 17:10
i fix to not having to install 3.29 is to burn the image on a cdrw with diskjuggler. then use Diskjuggler to create a new image that will work in the newest deamon tools. when burning DJ might ask if you want it to fix some structure errors in the image, select no first if that dont work try yes. after burning "explore" the cd to see if it burnt correctly then make your new image.

i want to make a working image without having to burn a cd and only with one click.that's my goal

Ex0skelet0r
June 29th, 2004, 21:22
the image has the name GAMENAME.cbi (gamename=the name that you have enter as game name in the beggining)
try download the program again: http://homepages.pathfinder.gr/Exoskeletor/Selfboot%20GUI%20by%20Exoskeletor%20v1%2 C1.exe
because i have upload it again (i have fix a small bug)

Yep good stuff.
I was one of those who could not quite figure out the manual instructions for making a selfboot CD or image.
With your little tool it was no problem at all. I fixed 3 images last night on my first run through it.
A few items if I may (using 1.2)
1) Hitting the close button on the upper right did not seem to close the GUI. I could still see each running process in my Task Manager
2) Any spaces in the directory path was causing much hardache. No biggie I just could not find anything here that said anything about it. Keeping all directory and filenames to the DOS 8.3 naming system solved that.
3) I have yet to be able to make a bootable CD using a directory of files I have compiled (DreamSNES inparticular). This could be me though, I am still playing/working on it.
Thanks again for the great GUI Ex0skelet0r. Made quite a few lives easier here I bet ;)

Yo LazerTag
1) yes that's right.i have noticed that now.only if you press it in the select menu window close the program.for all the other windows hit quit and not the "x" button FIXED
2) If you read the text after you click accept in the installer you will see this:
"Create selfbootable games for your Dreamcast Avoid installing in folders with spaces in the name and avoid unusual characters (like greek characters)" FIXED
3) i have check this mode and works for me (with resident evil 2 code veronica, i have all the game files in a folder.)
LazerTag
July 2nd, 2004, 21:27
1) OK glad it's not just me.
2) No one reads anything during installations :P j/k hehe
3) Probably just me. Using your program has given me a better understanding of building a bootable CD for Dreamcast. I'm sure now I'll figure it out.
Once again thanks.

July 4th, 2004, 00:57
Heinster it help you to create selfbootable games.just like the other tutorials (selfboot/fastboot/guickboot) but with a grafical user interface (GUI) buttons,commands,e.t.c. try it
Heinster
July 4th, 2004, 14:34

Heinster
July 4th, 2004, 17:51
In the folder of exoboot in data I only get binfiles and cue but no .cdi (TData01.bin) and in dos it says after it's done that it couldn't find the 1_blabla.bin(keep forgetting the name)

July 4th, 2004, 22:48
Some games do not have 1st_read.bin as the file that boots the game, the name may be different (ex: some_thing.bin). The program does not know the name of this file so it doesn't create the image. Usually the name of this file is written in ip.bin (if ip.bin exists) or in another *.bin file.
Heinster
July 4th, 2004, 22:52
I choose image to bootable image(option2) then place the image I want to make selfbootable in the left box and in the rightbox I tell it where to place it(atleast that's what I think)
I choose make an image below(second from above) and click go/continue
It starts to work in msprompt, see it running to 100% and in the end after it is done it says couldnt find 1_boot.bin or something like that... Altough it doe state it is done and in data there are different cues and bins(with one of them +/-700mb)
Ex0skelet0r
July 4th, 2004, 23:03
psy man do you know all the other possible names of 1st_read.bin?heinster can you tell me all the .bin files that are inside the image? (for me,i have test the games: shenmue 2 disk1, mr driller, resident evil code veronica, silent scope in all the modes)
(your image file must be in the \ExoBoot folder..NOT in the \ExoBoot\Data folder)
PsyMan
July 4th, 2004, 23:15
psy man do you know all the other possible names of 1st_read.bin?heinster can you tell me all the .bin files that are inside the image?
It's impossible to know any possible name, but if you open the ".bin" file that boots the game with a hex editor (or even a text editor) you'll find the sentanses "Lib Handle Start" and "Lib Handle End" placed somewhere in the beginning of the .bin file that boots the game.
Ex0skelet0r
July 4th, 2004, 23:38
i don't know if there is a way to modify my program to make those games bootable with only some clicks. :( .i will search a way.can you tell me some games with strange bin names?
heinster tell me the name of your game you're trying to make bootable.
PsyMan
July 4th, 2004, 23:53
A possible solution whould be to make the program "search" for these sentanses inside all the .bin files in the directory in order to find the .bin file that boots the game and then "patch" this file just like its name was "1st_read.bin" ;)

Heinster: try to mount your image in a virtual device with your daemon tools and try again in method 1.Because maybe your cdi image it's not in the right format
I forgot to say: in the next release my program with see your free drive space to make the image or burn a cd and it will check if your cdi is in the right format
PsyMan
July 5th, 2004, 00:35
If I remember right one of the programs that fastboot includes (and so does Ex0boot) can find the name of the .bin file that boots the game (while you're creating the image, when fastboot asks you to give the name of the boot file), you may be able to use the info from this program instead of finding the name by yourself.
Ex0skelet0r
July 5th, 2004, 01:00
no it can't find the name.you are giving the name.
PsyMan
July 5th, 2004, 01:16
It does but only if it finds ip.bin, so it's kinda useless because some games do not have an ip.bin file.

Can we do a feature request?!?
Okay... I isn't allowed because the emu authors could stop their work and all would be sad, but you are a nice quy and wouldn't stop the work, wouldn't you?
It would be cool, if you could a a function to remove the hacked intros of some echelons rips, because after removing that some games will work.
Another feature would be that you can remove the garbage, like in the GC games and then it would be the perfect tool.Hope you aren't angry because of the request, but I think you are interested in how you make you great tool better.
Yaeh: great tool, now I understand how to do selfboot images!?!
Ex0skelet0r

can you tell me some games with those echelon intros?
what do you mean garbage?the dummy files?
rcgamer
July 5th, 2004, 17:09
there are several different intros. and believe me some are not going to work, even if you put in the original 1st_read.bin I have already tried . i compared an original virtua tennis 2k2 with the echelon and there is no way to edit the 1st read.bi to make it work. even when i switched over the original 1st read.bin to the echelon game it wouldnt work. so i think (unless echelon comes out with the fix) you are out of luck playing some of the echelon releases.
the only one that seems to be fixable is the one with doa2le and by now everyone should know how to fix it. this fix also works on virtua strikers as well.

Exo? What could it be, if everytime the ISO will be converted to the CDI the CDI is smaller than the ISO and isn't able to boot (corrupted).
I tried it with the bootable SOulcalibur CD in my drive, but didn't worked (up to 20 times... sometimes the ISO is great 700,986 but the CDI is to small and sometimes the ISO is smaller, too.
I've found some bugs, which let ExoBoot crash: If you close the notes on the second window in the first mode, the make a new folder button will change to close notes or open notes, if you reopen it! And if you click on make a new folder (which is renamed to open or close) exoboot will crash. If you choose a folder where you extract the image it always make a new data folder. Why is it so? And the last thing is: there are some spelling errors.
(E.g. For CD-RW "spped" ) in the second window with the bugs, too!
The last thing is, if I'm allowed to translate these great tool into German? I will publish it on http://web431.essen082.server4free.de/emutrans/index.php?seite=news if I#m allowed to, but give you the translated version, before.

Hi! First thanks Exoskeletor for your gui, it's THE tool that i use to make selfboot images (i have a 2X speed RW recorder, so i don't have time enough to burn directly on a CDRW...).
I just wanted to talk about a 'bug' which isn't directly from your guy : On some games, Binhack crashes while trying to edit the 1ST_READ.BIN, then displaying some hex values (for debugging i suppose ?) ! The .BIN remains unedited, and the final .CDI image hangs up on the Sega logo. I got this result with the game Ooga-Booga, and some others (exemple: Tokyo Extreme Racer 1 from an original non selfboot release, despite it worked without problem with the version of this game that i extracted from Jeffma's racing compilation). So i wanted to know if someone already had that kind of thing, and if there is a way to bypass it (like hand-editing the .BIN, of course, but i didn't find a *clear* explanation for this.
Thanks for any answer! ^^
Ex0skelet0r

hmm.if its a bug of binhack i can't do nothing :(.does anyone knows other games with the same problem?
Atch
July 13th, 2004, 10:49
After reading some help files on the net, i figure out that we effectively can't do anything : binhack seems to work by looking for a particular string in the BIN file. So i think it crashes coz he can't find it in some particular BINs that don't contain it, or, more obviously, on BINs that are to small in size to contain this string... Hacking such BINs would probably require a decompiler :yucky: ! Too bad =(
MasterPhW
July 13th, 2004, 13:46
I was wondering about the CDI file which was given after the hacking.
It was much smaller then the unhacked one. Why?
My unhacked rip of virtual one was 6** MB and tzhe hacked one was 2** MB (didn't remember the real size) but it worked. Any idea why it's so?

this is not an error.it's the batch file which has been created by ExoBoot.
Try again using this program in another directory without spaces. (like: Dokumente und Einstellungen)

[QUOTE=NAruto2015]Hi everybody i dl DC - Soul Calibur(self)(MDS).zip and use Ex0skelet0r prog ExoBoot 1.21 but i get the following error.
WHY ARE YOU RUNNING Exoboot on THIS IMAGE?? its allready self booting and works with Chankast!!
I got the same image. You have to extract the image out of the zip file. you can then mount the .mds file directly with Daemon tools 3.46 and run with chankast with no problem- ran just fine for me.
ps- Please people!!!! - Exo is doing hard work here for us all and doesnt need to be bothered by "n00bs" who dont even know how to run working self-boot games properly.

Version 1,25 is ready:
- ExoBoot don't let you anymore to select a folder with spaces (If you have install ExoBoot in a directory with spaces then the program will display a message)
- Added support to search for the selfboot bin file (Thanx Johann for that)
- ExoBoot now checks your free hard disk drive space and don't let you extract the files if you don't have the right space left
- some other smaller bugs have been fixed
I have disable mode 2 because it was not working with all the image files, it wasn't able to search the selfbootable bin file and because it's better to use daemon tools (i don't think so that anyone use this mode)
I really try to make this program better and better but the code is starting and getting very big and it's not easy to test. Please forgive me for any bug you see. If you find one please tell it to me.
Someone test my program with a game which has a selfbootable bin file other that the usually 1st_read.bin.
Enjoy guys.

Yes, the final burned project worked. :whistling Hum, yes, and it did work to rebuild a selfboot image. Only have to image with burn program and finished.
I don't know yet what to do with non bootable images that also have extra audio tracks within the image or separate as with bin and cue. I believe the image burned with cdrecord is finialized and have no experience in adding those audio tracks after it is burned. Maybe exoboot is able to burn them also if they are present in a separate folder or set in the program itself eventually. Maybe you can post your thoughts also for me to see.
One game is Dead or alive that has cue, iso and Dead or Alive 02.mp3 > Dead or Alive 24.mp3. Another one is Gauntlet Legends that has three extra audio tracks within the .bin file. All the files I mentioned here can be extracted, converted and renamed before setting them in Exoboot. It generally consists to configure exoboot to take extra audio tracks with cdrecord if they exist in a seperate configurable folder. The files should be always alfabetical like audiotrack02.wav, audiotrack03.wav, etc. This sound easier then it is probably. Ill check later on this adventure....
Thanks and may your new ideas create themself, your bugs dissappear as silently as they came and the final result working better than hoped. Great. See ya.

the problem with the disk space i can't understad it.are you selecting the cd reader right? what it the letter of your hard disk and of your cd reader?
Well it seems that the code has problems with the virtual devices so i will disable this feature for now
Whirlinurd: I can make a mode only to remove the dummy files. and burn the extra adio files also. can you tell me the name of the extra audio files?
The way that the image file is created is very different from the way which the program burns a cd. the image's are working only with daemon tools 3,29 and not to all the pc's (for example the images aren't working in my computer). the best way to ccreate an image is to burn your game into a cd-rw cd and make an image from the cd with alcohol, nero or discjuggler
I have upload again the version 1,25 with the bug fixed. Mirror Link to Download here:

exo, nice work on this program, I'm using it for all my games and its really easy and actualy works.
I have a problem with the game Trickstyle, though.
It works fine after making the image, but I get no in game music.
See, the music are on tracks 2-14, while track 1 is the game files which only makes out 80mb (what the image comes out to) from ~400mb cd.
Btw, the cd I am using isn't selfbootable.
Is there a way to make an image keeping all the extra tracks? Another note, that if you use a cd player, you can play the music on those tracks.
Here's a picture of the original cd

yes this is a problem that i have.i am using mkisofs to create the images and mkisofs creates only data cd images without audio tracks. Im trying to find a way to create images with audio tracks (of course only with one click :) )
in the next version i will add an option to save your settings (so you will not have to enter them every time you're using ExoBoot)
for now the only thing that i can tell you is: use a cd-rw disk to burn the image and then create an image
Has anyone test it with games that have other bin file than 1st_read.bin?
Stay tuned

Has anyone test it with games that have other bin file than 1st_read.bin?
Hi Exo ! Yeah, i tried with some games using other bin than 1st_read.bin (like 1st_usa.bin), and it works fine. You just have to rename it to 1st_read.bin, and it works like a charm.
EDIT : sorry, i wasn't talking about the binfinder, but exoboot itself... Seems i'd better read before posting
I had a remark to do : i have difficults with some games, like Power Stone 2 or Confidential Mission. I have isos that are already selfboot, but i wanted to build a new one for each game, removing the dummy files to take less space on my HD. Unfortunately it didn't work for those (but fine with a bunch of others)... And i can't find why. Maybe the game itself checks it's own size ? It could be true, coz i observed some interesting things with other games.
I'll take Virtua Tennis 2 (european version) as an exemple : i also had a selfboot image, that i wanted to reduce, but it didn't work. Then i observed that the only audio track in 1st session was quite big (75 Mb), so i extracted this track as a wav file, replaced the 00session1.wav by the 75Mb one and built a new selfboot image (by the burning way to a CDRW) with your proggie. And it worked this time ! So i figure out that some games are able to check the size of some of their tracks (at lieast audio tracks)?
In a same way, some games are also able to check : 1- the size of their audio track(s), 2- the NUMBER of these audio tracks in the 1st session. (ie : Looney Toons Space Race and Hydro Thunder are of that kind). You can bypass it by extracting their audio tracks (with isobuster), then put these wavs to you exoboot folder (remove the 00session1.wav or it will be burned too), and burn everything on a cdrw. That's due to the fact that in the exoboot's script, it is asked to burn as the 1st session, *ALL* wav files (*.wav) in the directory, whitch is a good idea !!
I wish i was quite clear... (sorry english isn't my native language at all!)
Any comment about the track size check ? thanx !
Ex0skelet0r
July 22nd, 2004, 22:05
why you have rename the bin file?is ExoBoot working without renaming it?
No the program doesn't check the size at all. There are 2 reasons of this problem:
1. it's hacking again the 1st_read.bin file and some times this is creating the problem
2. the 1st audio wav. Non-selfbootable games doesn't have this one
i want a favour for you and for all the guys here. can you test something for me:
Tell me. all the selfbootable games has an audio track in the first session right? if you do the same thing that you have do with all the games are working fine? (i mean this:" i extracted this track as a wav file, replaced the 00session1.wav by the 75Mb one and built a new selfboot image (by the burning way to a CDRW) with your proggie. And it worked this time !")
I will add an option to remove the dummy files only because i see that a lot of people want it.

why you have rename the bin file?is ExoBoot working without renaming it?
When i said i had to rename the bin file, it was to answer your older question "Has anyone test it with games that have other bin file than 1st_read.bin?" which concerned the binfinder. But i misread it and thought it was about exoboot itself. So please forget it. :P
About the size check : i didn't mean that exoboot checked this, but the game itself ! I think that, for some games (i don't know why), the game checks itself its audio tracks.
About your request : i didn't understand what you exactly want from us ? You would like me and others to test the audio track extraction, then reinjecting it by replacing the 00session1.wav, FOR ANY GAME ? If i'm right, it isn't usefull for most of games, because most of them already have a single blank audio track in their 1st session, that has the same size as the 00session1.wav. But as I told you, i tried this method with games like 'Looney Toons Space Race' and 'Hydro Thunder', which have multiple audio tracks, and which won't selfboot if they are removed during the process. For those game, you have to have ALL these tracks, and which keeps their original lengh. I tried with blanked (no sound) wav files with the same lengh and it worked fine.
Is it what you were waiting for ?

I have tested several games until now. All the selfboot games I rebuild worked. Not counting the extra large first session. Not seen that one yet. I had two images that not worked with Exoboot. They were Hoyle Casino and Midway Greatest Volume 1. They did not have an 1ST_READ.BIN and/or IP.BIN. They had a 0WINCEOS.BIN and seem to be for WinCE. Not know what to do with those since they not work in Chankast.
The funny part of that 0WINCEOS.BIN is. When that data is used in Exoboot and everything is started the Exoboot folder is completely wiped exept Exoboot.exe and the data folder. All the files delete automaticly.
I have found an easier way instead of burning first to cd-rw. The image created by exoboot open it with Deamon Tools 2.29. That works. So why not use Deamon as source for Chankast because Chankast crashed when I tried. The cd is opened by windows so I used deamon virtual drive as source in Nero Burning Rom 6 and destination the image recorder. Use in Nero Disc Copy and as Read Options the 'Mixed mode or CD-Extra' setting. The new image works with Alcohol 120%. Not tested if the images work again with Deamon and Chankast.
Alcohol 120% and Deamon Tools 2.29 seem to work together without errors.
Edit
No binfinder finds nothing and says that the image does not contain any bin file. Maybe these games are to be run from the WinCE disk that comes with the dreamcast. That is possible.
I checked it for Hoyle Casino. It says 'No selfboot bin files found!'. The image freezes Chankast but is clearly already bootable since it shows the Sega grey screen.
Hoyle has a bin file but it is named 0WINCEOS.BIN. I can test Hoyle on a real dreamcast but I have to do it at my brothers house. He is using it now. Checking out. Let you know if it really was bootable on the real thing.
Interesting note:
I was always told that dummy files are written at the beginning of the cd to speed up reading and the data is placed to the outside. This is true. Exoboot reads all the files from the cd and writes the files to a selfboot image. But the dummy file lost its meaning because it is now written within the rest of the files somewhere on the cd. So to perfectly burn a selfbootable cd with dummy.dat the dummy should always be removed and inserted again withing the iso at the right sectors moving the data to the outside again.

Use BinFinder for Hoyle Casino and Midway Greatest Volume 1 and tell me if it founds the bin files
This is strange. why it tells you that it hasn't find any bin file if there is one.it should say that it hasn't find any bootable bin file..
EDIT:
All the files are deleted?? who is the stupid man that has create this program? :D . .this is happening because there isn't any bin files and the code from delete destinationdirectory\binfile.bin changes to destinationdirectory\ . thanx for the bug.i have just fix it
if Hoyle Casino hasn't any bin file and my program isn't creating a new one i can't understand how is bootable..i don't think that is bootable.can you test it on a real dreamcast?

The other night I removed the dummy's from a bunch of my games. If they werent build by exoboot, I mounted them in daemon and made the new image from exoboot. Then I would copy all the files from the cd except the dummy, put them in a directory and do the option of data to cd. Worked every time. I guess it used the same 00track.wav or w/e for each one, but it worked.
But the dummy files had alot of names besides DUMMY.DAT
0a.dat (i think it was) was a common one in echelon games, and the file contained all 7's instead of all 0's. Others were like 0DUMMY.DAT 000DUMMY.DAT or similar and others I can't remember.

bleeder all the files that have the extension .dat are dummy files?
Whirlinurd
July 23rd, 2004, 04:25
 I am not really sure you are asking that about files that have the extension .dat are all dummy files. Yes, for most of the games there are other extensions used. It was NFL 2K2. There were other small files using the .dat extension in the root of the cd. By simple skipping the *.dat file will not work with that game. Offcourse you want it automaticly without the intervention of the user. It will be safer to look for the largest .dat file in the root on the cd. That also wouldn't work for NFL 2K2 because there aren't any dummy files on NFL 2K2 cd. To make it more complicated I also saw a echelon game with something like 00AA.ECH as dummy.
:whistling So how to solve this. To let the user manually exclude the dummy before the proces starts. If the user selected the 'skip dummy file' option then open a folder view of the source files and the selected file will be skipped when copying. This is only needed in the 'cd to cd or image'.
:plain: I also wanted to ask you something about the 'Date to cd or image'. Why can't I only select the hard drive partition Exoboot is installed on?
:bounce: I can understand that cd drives aren't going to work because files are changed in the source location. It will look interesting if I can choose the virtual drive, selecting the files I want to use as DATA. Exoboot then uses a configuration saved 'work' folder to copy the files there. After the image/cd is created the 'work' folder is cleaned. Offcourse this only works if a cd drive source is selected otherwise the files are copied from the hard drive to the 'work' folder again taking more space as neccesary.
:paperbag: I hope this all makes sense. Sometimes I am just rambling away. Hope this helps.

I just got worms armageddon... it's an mds/mdf non-self boot and so I tried to run it through exoboot and I did options data to cd or image.. then I did make an image and set the name of it to worms and set the data folder as the folder with the data in it then hit ok and it opened up a dos window and then deleted everything in the exoboot folder except the data folder and the exoboot.exe.... did I screw something up or what?

nailclippers: this is a bug of ExoBoot it's not your fault.i have fix this.wait for the next release.this is happening because your cd hasn't any 1st_read.bin file or something like that
Whirlinurd:Well the only solution is an option to delete automaticly the dummy files or not.If the user wants to select the dummy files all the dummy files (*.dat,*.ech) will be added in a list box and you can select some of them or all of them to extract them.
You can use CDmage in order to select the files you want and them extract them in a folder. Then use data to cd and select the folder
When you say select only the hard drive partition you mean that you want ExoBoot search all the folders in this partition in order to find ExoBoot folder? Except that, ExoBoot folder is the default folder selected when you open the data to cd mode.

Exo, unfortunately, the dummy file can have several extensions : i already have seen some .DAT, .ECH, but also .BIN, and even dummy files without any extension... So i think the best thing to do would be to let the user specify the name of this dummy file ? My first idea was to automaticaly delete the biggest file of the CD, but it would raise problems for games like V-Rally2, which biggest file is an important data file, and not a dummy at all... So i maintain that a field in which the user specifies the name of that dummy file is for me the best option (and not hard to code :bouncy: ).
off topic :Another thing that made me failing my first attempts with exoboot : when i copied files from the cd (or virtual drive) to the /data folder, i forgot to remove the 'read-only' properties of these files, so that exoboot could't hack the 1st_read.bin lol. I just say that for new exoboot users that wouldn't think about such a simple step  )

Ex0skelet0r, about the 'data to cd image option'. No did not mean to search all the folders. Exoboot starts in the default Exoboot folder. Right under 'Step 2' there is an dropdown box where another drive can be selected. If I wanted to go to another partition, the folder view sticks in the default folder of exoboot. So if Exoboot is installed on e:\exoboot\. The other partitions such as C or D can't be browsed in. That's all that was basicly.

Hi Ex0skelet0r. So I burned a dozen new games and visited my brother to add them to my collection there. Even played Metropolis Street Racer with my original Dreamcast Steering Wheel bought for 5 Euro at some toy store. The wheel is still as useless as when I tried it the first time. But gotta have it if it's dreamcast merchandise.
Ok, lets talk about Hoyle Casino without IP.BIN and 1ST_READ.BIN where binfinder couldn't find any selfboot bins. I told you already that the game had a 0WINCEOS.BIN in the root of the cd. As I suspected already with Chankast the game also boots in the real Dreamcast and I played some Cho Gow Poker before turning it off again. Not having a clue how to play it offcourse.
I think it is not using a standard bin file with another filename. If that is true binfinder should find it anyway. I cannot explain it.
Edit:
Yes I know Chankast doesn't support WinCE games. To be more specific about it booting in Chankast. It did boot but only too the grey Sega screen and locked up there. Then you asked me if I could test it on a REAL Dreamcast because you wondered why a game with only a 0WINCEOS.BIN that Binfinder did not find could be selfbootable. So now you know that binfinder can not detect selfbootable games containing an 0WINCEOS.BIN file.

Fixed a bug with games without a standard bootable bin file
Fixed a bug with the free hard disk space message
Added support to save your settings
some smaller updates

When i say to save your setting's i mean to save cd-rom speed,cd-writer bus-id,destination folder etc so you don't have to enter them every time
Post any bug here guys (Please god please, no more bugs :D )

I haven't upload only the ExoBoot.exe because there are some new files added

As for interface suggestions. I suggest making ExoBoot not as long vertically. For any resolution below 1024x768 it's very hard to see fully, especially with the notes expanded.
Try to keep it simple, clean looking, and quick to use. That's my advice.

I looked at the interface of exoboot. I would like to suggest these alterations:
- Divide the steps into a wizard format with the back and forward buttons on each screen.
- Move all the one time input to the settings screen. CD-RW speed, Select CD reader, Find Bus ID, Read Bus ID, Write Bus ID, Image Format. The user can select a profile in the first screen of the wizard with a user description. Example: Reading from ... and writing to ... at a maximum of 12 speed. Or Reading from ... and writing to E:\image.cdi.
- (Optional) Summarize all set data on the last screen in the wizard before hitting the create button. So the user can confirm it by reading it whole. With more information when or if it's available.
- Create a small note which every wizard screen only if the user can forget something. Example: Reading drive I: Insert cd... (I: is the drive selected as reader already set as a profile.)
- Disable 'Create image from the selfbootable game' if 'Burn selfbootable game (in) on a cd-rom' is selected. User can allways burn the image later to cd maybe with Exoboot or with burning program.
- Always try to use the same default extract file location for example E:\Exoboot\Data. If there still data existing ask user that it will be deleted before extraction of new data. (Only for CD to CD or Image mode)
- Move and change the 'Delete in the end the folder with data files' to the end of the wizard and use 'Burning complete' or 'Image created' and ask user if the data can be deleted. This for when the burning failed or the image creating went wrong. (Only for CD to CD or Image mode)
- (Optional) (Scanbus alteration)
Use cdrecord -scanbus > MAINDIR\Scanbus.txt. And reload that txt into the settings window. Or extract only the drives from the txt that are cd/dvd drives and put them into a dropdown box.
Note: What I learned is.
- Always try to standard information so the user has to only use the minimum to get the end result.
- Never let the user set new information again, take it somewhere else if exists. That's why everything is moved to the settings screen and profiles are extended.

Well..i don't argee with Disabling 'Create image from the selfbootable game' why to do that? if the user want to burn the image later check don't check it..i want a lot of times both of them
i cannot check when the burning is complete automaticly because the bat file that is burning the game is an external program.my program can't check when it will finish
Never the user set new information and the user use the minimum. (if i make the changes you suggest the user will have to do a lot more)
Thanx for the notes

- Move and change the 'Delete in the end the folder with data files' to the end of the wizard and use 'Burning complete' or 'Image created' and ask user if the data can be deleted. This for when the burning failed or the image creating went wrong. (Only for CD to CD or Image mode)
I would just flat out get rid of that option so someone doesn't accidentally do it... it would be hard to do, and in most cases fairly harmless (just have to copy it all over again) but some people have slow computers or hate waiting for stuff to copy over just because of accidentally hitting the wrong box... :)

Ok, I see it too now. Disabling image isn't good as I thought. And yes, the burning is a external program and can not be checked when finished. Ok, when cdrecord starts burning and it fails will exoboot still delete all the game data? Putting the delete game data also under the quit buttion. I mean the commands offcourse. That way the game data will still be available to retry another burn when the program is still running.
What I have told you are just ideas I made looking at the program and how it works. Some doesn't help at all, some do. Just keep the good ones and put them on your wishlist.
I also attached that wince.bin to a earlier post if you haven't found it yet. It's on page 8.
nailclipper: Not really sure about removing that option. It's still a good feature to remove data that isn't used anymore. Yes, accidents can happen with any program. But how many users are going to make that mistake? I can not see that there aren't going to be a lot of them. What's better all the users removing the data manually or the ones making the accident and have to copy again? I think the first one is better.

Only those three files on the cd's Mat_Jack1. Hmm, I have seen dvd's that are empty and still play in standalone dvd players. you can't make an image by this way... and the gui of Ex0skelet0r is not made for that, it's made to make a selfboot image, from an image...
if you want to create this image from your original gdrom, you need a cable to link your pc and your dreamcast, and if you don't have this cable, you have to download this image from the net...

Ok thats is your problem. you have the original GD rom, then only way you can rip that on your computer is with cables to go to your pc and stuff. If you have a burned CD from an Image, you can rip the game without using cables. But nightmare is right, the only way a store bought game can be rippes is with cables that connect to the PC.

Hello has all!
Exoboot seems to be a super program but, envortunatly I have never make a autobootable CD from iso
(that surely comes from me ^ _ ^)
I post this message to announce that the version 1.26 does not work on my computer :
- the button "close note" does not function
- the button "continue" does not function (if i don't select "BURN)
if i select burn, the "selfboot" window open but it do nothing !
it's strange.
PS : the version 1.25 work well (exept the the games do not run on my DC )
PSē : I m on Window XP pro and i use Alchool 120% to make a "image" of the iso. my DC is a "europe" version.
sorry of my lack to know to make and my poor English

i'm having a hell of a time gettin this to work now. i've tried 18_wheeler and capcom vs snk2 to remove the dummy files wich are 0a.dat and 0.dat respectfully. after copying the files to a temp directory (without the dummy file) i then use the "data to image" option. i then use diskjuggler to burn the image to a cdrw. then use diskjuggler again to create another cdi image so i can use it with the latest version on alcohol 120 virtual drive. but after doing all that it just boots to the bios screen. i did test the games before and they booted in to the game. i have also managed to do this with earlier versions of exoboot with success. most games i have now are self boot i just need an easy way to del the dummy file. is there a way to reach in and delete the file from within the cdi image? if the next version of chankast does indeed play non-selfboot cds then removing the dummy file would be the only use for this app. maybe u could look into coding something like this. thank you.

Your game is already bootable right?and you want only to remove dummy files.insert the image into daemon tools and use cd to cd or image mode.extract the files with my program (select both remove dummy files and my game is already bootable) then remove dummy files and click next and BURn your game into a cd (Don't make an image because it's not 100% sure that it will work). After you have burn the cd use any program you want to make an image of it.try now using this image and tell me if it work's
KyJelly
August 6th, 2004, 20:44
on the secong screen the one with the "extract" button i choose the virtual drive "h" the the image is mapped to, but under step 3 the "select dummy file" window is greyed and only shows the contents of the exoboot folder. i am unable to select any files to add. if i choose extract then the progress bar instantly fills up , no files are extracted, and the "select" box becomes empty but the "add" button becomes enabled.
i am using daemon tools 3.46 and also tried it with alcohol 120 virtual drive.
KyJelly
August 6th, 2004, 20:52
also on an unrealated note when i progress past the first screen a box pops up saying the feature you are trying to use is on a cd-rom or other blah blah blah... insert the "misrosoft offixe XP professional with front page" disk and click ok.i then click cancel and another pop up with error 1706 "can't find disk" then click ok on that and it then goes back into exoboot.
there is also a small square button under the "info" button that says Com man d13 vertically on it that is not in your pics
KyJelly
August 6th, 2004, 22:04
ok i got it to work but i have to use the "data to cd" option and copy the files off the virtual drive first (minus the dummy file) then write straight to cd instead of making a image file. having to not do the copying manully would of course be nice tho. also when using the extraction button (if it does indeed work :)) the option to NOT extract the dummy file should be used. it would cut time off having to copy all files then delete one specific one.
Ex0skelet0r
August 7th, 2004, 00:11
im really sorry about command 13.it was about testing only.i cant understand why it can't extract your image.maybe it has problem with image drivers.i will test it with an image drive and i will tell you.
If you are using mode 1 then the you have to do the extraction.so if you do it only to delete 1 file it doesn't matter because you will not have to do it again later.
I'm uploading again ExoBoot.exe without the command13 for the guys that already have 1,30.just copy it on the exoboot folder.
(And the installation of ExoBoot 1,30 without the command13)
Sorry about that.(i guess i have to test it more times.it takes a lot of time if you are creating the program and in the same time you're testing it)

Sick. I can't believe this. I have been trying everything to get my games to run, reading through multiple threads only to find out that there is nothing I can do. I just bought a couple NTSC games (Soul Caliber, Virtua Striker 2 and Daytona USA) and had a hell of a time trying to get them to run. I was able to make an iso image (using Isoproducer) and mount it on Daemon Tools 3.29, but I ended up getting an audio warning that the disc is only to be used on the Dreamcast console. Also, the only files I can see upon inspection are:
"ABSTRACT.TXT", "BIBLIOGR.TXT", AND "COPYRIGH.TXT".
Don't ge me wrong, Chankast is an awesome emulator, but shouldn't it be able to play legitimate Dreamcast games bought from the store? For example, Epsxe is a playstation emulator that can do this. Maybe this will be available in a future release? I hope the makers of this emu don't take offense to this, as I realize Chankast is in its early stages (and has awesome compatibility already).
If anyone can help with this problem, I would really appreciate it.

what i'm trying to tell u is it's illegal for u to use either chankast or epsxe (or any other emulator for that matter) if u dont own the original console. how could u have gotten the bios file if i dont actually have one yourself? If anyone make an image and it doesn't work then try to make a bootable cd from a cd-rw disk and then make an image of it.
(I have say a lot of times that for now the images from the exoboot are not working 100%.)
If you burn a game in a cd it will work 100%. Except if it is a WinCE game
Im going for holidays for 3-4 days. C u from an internet cafe or when i will be back

My friend always runs the utopia disc in his dreamcast before playing resident evil code veronica , so do we need the utopia boot disc in order to run the game in chankast ? is resident evil code veronica compatible with chankast and self bootable ?
has any one played resident evil code veronica successfully ?
if yes , please tell me how did u do it ?
i have already downloaded the utopia disc
Happy holidays , exoskeletor !!!

K Jelly, If you have used the utopia disk it says "If you paid for this you've benn ripped off". Utopia is free cause its meant to be that way. COmpanies just call it something else and try to sell it kinda like Action replay and Discs like that are sold under a dozen names.
And Darkrice, He has a point to a small degree. You dont own a dreamcast...therefore you cant use the bios legally period. And unless you own the GDROM of the game you want to use on CHANKAST then you cant do that either. The CHANKAST team is trying to keep one of the most Anti-Emulator companies ie. SEGA from finding a reason to sue them. Such as promoting pirating and sharing copyrighted files. Hence their over zealousness of the RULES of no BIOS request, NO ISO requests and the such. If you have a serious question on "cough" less legal aspect "cough" then ask it in a Political Correct manor such as.
Dear Exo,
I have the Utopia Disk Image as well as CHankast with NTSC (U) Bios and i can not get a Non-boot image to work and im having problems with your Self Booter GUI. +State Error or Specific Issue+ and wait for response. Mods will usually calm those who feel "obligated to state the obvious iun a rude and hostile manor.

EXO- I am having troubles with your program. When ever i select mode 2 to make the image file from the data file. it always deletes my dummy file and gives me a image file around 200 mb instead of 700mb. No matter what option i pick it still deletes my dummy file. Is there anyway to stop the program from deleting my dummy file so i can have a image gile of around 700mb?

Neowhitewolf ,I already own the GDROM . I am never gonna ask for ROMS ,ISO or BIOS. All i want you do is help me in running my homebrew games and making MY dreamcast games bootable
what is the WinCE file which exoskeletor mentioned and how do we create that dummy file which feartetsuo mentioned ?

Some dreamcast games were developed using the WinCE development platform. Chankast does not support these games.
Using the utopia boot disk you may be able to run some non-selfbootable games, but if you can't a selfbooting program is the last choice.
I personaly think that the whole procedure (to try and make a game selfbootable) is kinda useless since Chankast partialy supports the utopia boot disk and probably it will support it entirely in one of it's later releases.

Yeah, my Dreamcast supports the boot disk, too, but I#m to lazy to insert it every time, so I use the selfboot thing and I don't have to insert it every time. Great, isn't it?

Exo- is it just me. But why does your program always delete my dummy file when i try to make an image file from my data folder? I got it to wor once with out deleting my dummy file, and the game was selfboot. But now it always deletes my dummy file and leaves me with a 200mb image file.

Yeah, still there and waiting for a new version.
And I've found another little bug: sometimes the dummyfiles are in the folders, bit the ip.bin is everytime in the main dir of the cd. But you great prog can't browse these others fodlers, because there isn't a ip.bin. Hope you can handle this too! Great prog, man, keep working on it, would be a shame to discontinue it now on these great stage!

feartetsuo: why you don't want the dummy files to be deleted? there are useless.

The dummy files are used to push the actual game data to the outer part of the CD, for faster and smoother loading i guess. Great program though, it really is.

in fact, it's useless if you use a cd or a cd image with your pc, but if you want to use the cd with a dreamcast it's avoid useless work for the dreamcast drive...

no, i know it's written on the echelon selfboot guide, but it's wrong...
(here infos about gdroms : http://mc.pp.se/dc/gd-ws_txt.html )
dummy files are created for the use of cdroms on dreamcast (it doesn't exist on gdroms), the purpose of this file it's to fill the cdrom of datas (real or not), because if a part of the cd is not written, the dreamcast drive will attempt to read that to see if it's an audio track (a small slowdown + useless work for the drive)...
note: in the link you can see it's possible to write the files in specific order (by a list) but it's a gdrom feature... remember your are on pc when you write files on cd, and you can't select the order of the files (so i'm curious to know how the dummy file can push something, because you can't select his location on the cd)...

Hey exo, don't make to much work, there is already such a prog, it's called nLite.
But you could do a thing were you can (as well) insert other (windows related) things, like DirectX Updates, runtime libraries and such things... that would be great....
But back to business: all the new created images have (if you mount them) a new name: autoboot. Is there any way to change that? A insert name for (mounted) image name... okay, I can rename the image but not the real name... you understand what I mean?

....wtf..you are right friend.. i will fix it now. I will make the program to give the same name for the real cd name and the image file name (The name you give in the game name box)
Some new fixes:
- Some fixes in the code made the program faster.
- Other smaller bug fixed
- Added option to not remove any dummy file.
- Log windows shows now in the end the total duration.
- Fixed a bug when opening ExoBoot without a cd-rom in the first drive.
- Fixed a bug when an important file was missing from the ExoBoot\Settings folder.

ok. download the file that i have upload in a previous post and tell me if it works. don't worry about the error with the unavaliable devices. This is happening because you haven't a cd-rom on your cd-rom drive. you can still use the program without problem

no still the same says run time error 713 class not registered also says that file you gave above needs to be installed? All the other versions you have worked the only reason I want to use this version is that in this latest version you have the option of removing dummy files that's all I want to use. Could just use the 1.26 version or the 1.21 and just add the dummy remover? I hope by adding that file to the that it won't mess up my pc. It did say that users should not go in that file.

Hey exo what would happen if I do a cd to cd selfbootable if the cd is already seldbootable? If it would be okay it would get rid of those dummy files I wanted to get rid of? But 1.21/1.26 would the program let me do it though?
