I can't seem to get the directional pad to configure.

You might wanna try loading the tools that come the Sidewinder CD. One of them can force the directional pad into DIGITAL mode - I think that may fix your problem. I know what the stupid Freestyle Pro can be like. Probably the worst controller MS (and one of their last too) ever made. POS
