I am using mupen64 and have a real n64 controller hooked up with a little box thing that hooks up to the computer with usb, dmesg says it's treated as a joystick. anyway, how would I go about using it for mupen64? is it possible?

as a side note, whenever I try to play perfect dark with the keyboard and stuff, it wants to save, but nothing works on that menu, save doesn't work, delete doesn't work, cancel doesn't work, how do I fix that?

well for me it was pretty straightforward. I have a psx/n64 usb adapter from jandamans import gaming. I am using mandrake 10 official. Im using blights plugin. Heres how i assigned everything.
Step1:Open Mupen and click "Options -> Configure"
Step2:Click "Plugins" tab and insure that under input "Blight's SDL input" is used
Step3:Click config under Input
Step4:On the opened screen beside where it says "Device:" i clicked until "6666:0667" came up. Which made no sense to me, but my input worked so i didnt care. From then on out, just pick the buttons you want. Hope ive helped.
