"Direct 3D failed to initalize HAL device" error message

Whenever I use Direct 64 or Jabos, I recieve an error message that says that Direct 3D failed to initialize my HAL device, when I use Direct 64, it does not load at all, but when I use Rices Direct 3D plugin, it works fine, I really want to know how Direct 64 for works so help will be much appreciated, thanks. PS, I have had this message before when I used a 24bit Intel card way back and now that I have a Radeon, I use 32bit all the time which I thought could be the cause, but the message keeps coming up, I tried 16bit also still didn't work.

Try setting your desktop (not the plugin) to 16-bit or update your drivers (www.ati.com).

Tried it already, and I have the latest Catalyst 4.5

Happened to me too, all I had to do was log off windows then log right back on, works everytime.

I recommend to downgrade the Catalyst drivers to version 3.8, because that was the latest Catalyst version that I tested and didn't notice any major problems with 32 BPP. If you have a Radeon 9500 Pro and/or earlier, I recommend Catalyst 3.2.
