I've seen worse, not spider bite related, but I still can't sleap properly:P since I got the oppurtunity to work at ER and OP...
But you should really get that checked? :P

Did the guy just let his thumb decay after the bite? He should have either has it treated or have the thumb amputated before it spread like that. Perhaps that's what he had done eventually since that could get badly infected.

Doesn't sound real to me, unless it was an infection caused from the bite, rather than the bite itself?...If venom were to kill any cells, I would think it would do it within the first day, not several days after. Plus, a venom bite would dissipate into the bloodstream after the first day, whereas an infection would take a few days to grow a la what is happening here.
Hell, I am not a doc or anything, just a guess.

Yeah, i suspect there is some foul play here, but he never said it was his own hand, now did he? There's billions of people out there. One of them this must have happened to.

If I didn't know any better, I would say that it was a realy bad staph infection.

Not true, depending on the spider the venom could kill cells over a period of days. Of course such a bite wouldnt be from a Black Widow or Brown Recluse as you would be dead in a day if you didnt revieve treatment. Those two are the only dangerous spiders found in North America. Any idea what kind of spider it was, oh and please tell me those pics arent you.

What kind of spider venom would do this? E.g. what specific spider?
Well, whatever kind of bite it is, I wouldn't think it would have to be amputated...doesn't look like the cellular necrosis is deep enough.

Either way I bet his hand stunk :D

I also dont think that a normal spider bite could have such consequences. Judging from the background, the guy is in medical attention and someone tried to stitch the wound. Either this was a very bad doctor or maybe some kind of volunteer experiment (just thought about X-Files, dont mind me) :-)

> Hell, I am not a doc or anything, just a guess.
I soon will be (well, if you consider 2 years being soon...)
It looks real to me.
The spider venom isn't "designed" to simply kill, but aslo to digest the prey (mostly insects and small mammals, for the biggest spiders. They inject the venom, then pack the prey in some kind of cocoon made of "web wire" (dunno the right word, you get the idea). They can suck the liquified result whenever they want then).
The necrosis we can see here may result of the digestive power of the venom, or of an (hypothetical) additionnal thrombotic power (thrombosis = intravascular coagulation).
If it is infected: The venom may have been primarilly infected, or the wound may have been contaminated aftewards with "necrogenic" germs. But I dont think that the infection is a major problem here.

This is the culprit. Called a Brown Something-or-other. :puke:

Ah that makes sense, I have heard that before, never realy thought about what it would do to a person. I always figured that for the most part, venom was only meant to stun the prey, as killing the prey would be a bit counter-productive if the spider intended to drink the blood (because the blood would coagulate if it did). Hell, every venom bite I have had always attacked the nervous system (I feel tingling all over), the necrosis isn't realy bad at all, in fact the worst I ever had it just turned into a calous.
Jaz: thats a Brown Recluse, nasty little suckers. If you have ever lived in the south eastern US, you'd identify them by the violin shaped dark brown spot on from their torso and head. Theres nothing you can do about a bite from one of those except use antibiotics, which don't do anything much to stop the spread. Cutting off the dead tissue does nothing, and that last pic is probably the worst it would get.

Obviously, as was just said, a brown recluse would NOT kill you in a day. Reactions vary from nothing to something like that over a large area such as your back (not quite as necrotized, however, from what I have seen.) I saw a show on the discovery channel about them. Death happens almost never.
EDIT: Those last 2 pics look photoshop'ed IMO

Heh, yeah, people always tend to have this assumption that you are in extreme danger whenever you get a venom bite from anything. I get stung by scorpions all the time, and everytime I tell somebody, they are always like "Oh my god! Go the hospital hurry!!!", whereas I just casualy take a motrine and watch TV for an hour or so til the tingling sensation is mostly gone.
