is it possible to get GiriGiriSaturn to display in 1:1 ratio instead of stretching to the default size? some of the 2D games i'd kinda like to be able to play without uglification.

yeah, i didn't think so.
i did notice that all the background layer disabling options have no effect whatsoever from the frontend though, which may be part of it.

if nothing else, SSF runs Shin Butouden, even if only at 15fps or so >_>
