This will be the official thread for anyone to show off their screenshots of games from various saturn emulators.
It would be helpful to list the game and emulator used as well :)
To take screenshots, hit Control+Print Scrrent (above insert key) then paste into MS paint, and save as a PNG or JPEG and upload.
I'll start it off with Daytona USA from SSF 0.06 Alpha

Game: Christmas Nights
Running on: Girigiri(sega) Hack
info: The game runs almost flawlessly. A few sound effect issues here and there, but not too many. The background music and sung lyrics are great. Now I gotta get my Nights Into Dreams disk back and play the whole game. Christmas Nights only lets you play the first level/boss. The game also runs full speed most of the time and slow downs are almost unnoticeable. I had to edit the games.dat and entered a "christmas nights"+gamecode+options entry though, but the game works great nonetheless. The game ran horrendously slow before I added the entry. ;)

Er... couple things.
First, how do you zoom in like that?! ^_^
Second, AFAIK due to the way Saturn handles 3D and the way it has to be emulated, you can't filter textures without either destroying compatibility or destroying geometric coherence.
Also performance would be a disaster zone on all but the most powerful CPU's... unless GiriGiri found some straaaaaange way to accelerate Quadratic primitives on modern graphic cards?

Hehe. I didn't zoom in. After beating the boss, a replay of what you did in the level is shown. Which zooms and pans by itself. Kinda cool. Press the x,y, or z buttons to get rid of the score chart.
It seems filtering is possible since Satourne does it quite nicely using OGL on the games it runs. And some people have gotten girigiri to use texture filtering. Here are some shots of Sonic R with texture filtering done with girigiri. I didn't do these shots.

And here are some shots with filtering enabled in girigiri hack with Panzer Dragoon Saga.

I can see that it'd be possible to filter textures in Saturn emulation... much like it's possible on PSX... but how are they accelerating the video? How does Satourne use OpenGL? Do they just rely on OpenGL to interpolate quads into triangles?
zorbid
May 22nd, 2003, 00:08
AFAIK, OpenGL supports the quads natively, it's among the first thing you learn in Ogl tutorials (http://nehe.gamedev.net/data/lessons/lesson.asp?lesson=02). (search for glBegin(GL_QUADS);)
I don't know if the cards support quads in hardware, or if the driver converts them into triangles, but it can easilly be done :)

That's what I meant. Sure you can do quads in OGL, but not on modern hardware... not since Direct3D's inception, anyway. Actually, I take that back, nVidia held out with quads longer than any other IHV but they jumped over to triangles with Riva128.
Yes, quads can be converted to triangles for hardware rasterisation... but that could cause some horribly broken graphics if any Saturn games used non-coplanar vertices on their quads, which I'm sure at least a few did...

How about Guardian Heroes? I tried it a week ago with my GeForce 2 and had some black Lines in the game. Now I have a Geforce 4 ti 4200, the game runs a LITTLE faster and the black lines are still there. Anyone any suggestions how to get rid of them?

Hmm. I've got Christmas Nights running on the newly released version of Satourne. Satourne uses ogl for emulating the vdp's which enables some nice filtering options. But it seems the filtering messes up the quad polygons that Nights uses. As will be evident by the following shots. Maybe it's the way ogl vdp plugin is drawing the quads, but they have weird lines showing the quads. They are even more noticeable with full filtering. The following shots are without filtering on the quads and the lines around the quads are still quite noticeable.
fivefeet8
May 29th, 2003, 06:22
The game is running at around 50 fps on my system. Very playable if it wasn't for the lack of controller options. Runs a lot smoother than on girigiri though. I also had to set the "sh2" frequency option to '.5' to get that speed. Anything lower and the game starts frameskipping.

Last one for now. I've also gotten Panzer Dragoon 1 and a few other games running on Satourne. I'll post them up later after more testing. This pic really shows the messed up quad allignment.

It isn't alignment. I'll tell you exactly what it is.
The same thing happens when you tile multiple textures across one group of triangles.
Quads (at least, the way Saturn does them - but I think it's a universal thing) can't have textures applied across a large area... it's one quad -> One texture piece. So, when Satourne tesselates the quads into triangles, it tiles the texture where the quads would be... and you can't can't bilinear filter between two textures. The lines are where the bilinear filtering just stops.

Hey guys! Here's a shot of Panzer Dragoon with Satourne 1.0. No sky/water but everything else looks pretty good. It plays until it loads the next episode, and then crashes. Luckily, the code for level select still works, so you can just skip to any level (including the last boss). Runs about 20 fps on my system with all graphics options turned on (not much faster without).

Yeah, once you beat Panzer Dragoon Zwei the "Pandora's Box" option opens up, to give you a lot of fun toys (new dragons, different berserk and shot modes...). To earn more cheats, just log more hours or beat the game with higher enemy hit ratio (don't miss anything). Here's a couple shots from Wipeout. Works perfectly, but tends to hang on load screens:

I was messing around with the newest version of SSF (007_prototype_R9), so I took some screens for everyone to take a look at. Awesome speed (full-speed in these games on my P4 2.6ghz) and full CD sound (no sfx though), but I think the author sacrificed some display compatibility to get there. Sega Rally used to be perfect on older versions, with all the display and menus visible, but now the HUD and menu are all gone... Hopefully this awesome emu will continue to see progress! :D

Hey Guys!
I have some new Screens.
Here: Die Hard Arcade
I tested it with SSF 0.07 Prototype R13 and Satourne 1.1p
It runs faster with Satourne (30 - 40fps) but with Satourne it has some grafic glitches and no Sound. On SSF its slow and has no Glitches and of course no Sound :P

Just skip Intro Movie after Sega Logo and after pressing Start in Main Menu Screen by pressing Start Button all the Time.
Then the game is full Playable. Very nice and speed is nice too

How on earth do you get bilinear filtering (filtered/smooth) textures in GiriGiri?

How on earth do you get bilinear filtering (filtered/smooth) textures in GiriGiri?
I recall it was assertained that it's because some older video cards forced bilinear filtering when you set a certain AF option. Haven't gotten it to work on my current video cards myself since they are a bit newer.

Here's a shot of Nights Into Dreams running on the latest version of SSF (with scanlines!). In the past few weeks SSF showed some impressive progress; it is now faster (Dynarec), it has better GFX and the FMVs run fullspeed even on my Pentium M @ 1.73GHz...
Did I mentinon that it now has a quite advanced audio support? If you have a decent Pentium 4 or Athlon 64 CPU I highly recomend to give it a try, it's really impressive!

What games run flawless on SSF? And how do I get it to work?
PsyMan
May 30th, 2005, 01:33
You need a CPU with SSE2 instructions (preferably a Pentium 4 or Athlon 64 @ 2GHz) and of course the Saturn BIOS. There are a few games that run quite flawlessly (Story of Thor 2, Thunderforce V, Shining Wisdom, etc.) but unfortunately Shining Force 3 and Nights Into Dreams seem broken in the latest alpha (Nights freezes at some point and Shining Force 3 doesn't boot).

Can SSF run panzer dragoon saga? I tried it with Giri Giri, and the FMV was really choppy and there were no music during battles, is there any way to fix that or any emu that corrects this particular game?

I hadn't tried SSF in a while, so I booted up the new version, and it's looking better than ever! Great shot there, Psyman. Panzer Dragoon 1&2 ran great, as did Sega Rally (pretty much perfect). The big surprise for me so far was Sonic 3D Blast running perfectly! Pretty mediocre game, but I always loved the music in this one--it was fun to play it a bit again. Here are some shots. I'll test out a couple other games tomorrow to see what else may be running better.

Yeap, afaik Nights is 100% playable in this realease. Shining Force still crashes though (was playable in R5, or R4 or even R1 I think).
Story Of Thor 2 and Virtual On are also playable and looking great...
If you want more speed you can deactivate sound anytime :D
Edit: When a game crashes or freezes when it boots or loads it might be due to a "bad" ISO+MP3 image. Saturn is very sensitive to this matter. In any case try to convert the MP3s to WAVEs and burn the image (ISO+WAVE) to a CD.

Yeah. Saturn emulators are evolving a lot recently. From what I've heard Satourne is also having some impessive progress (ie: The videos on Nights work).
Some other projects also look very promising (Saturnin and Yabause).
The most amazing thing about SSF is its compatibility and speed in conjuction with the low level video emulation (through software!) and the emulated sound

i know.. i'm sitting in limbo now about what to do with my saturn stuff
i've got roughly 60 originals (all us region w/ case+manual), all US demos (Except xmas nights) and a few accessories. i've never downloaded a saturn iso.. go figure
but anyay, i'm not pressed for money. but thinking about selling them (Actually spent quite a while today taking pics of all the individual games for ebay)
i havent really lost interest, but college+job+reallife leaves little time for anything and i cant exactly move all my games into the dorm room when i leave in august :P
that and SSF requires sse2 (which my athlon xp lacks).
not to mention i've long forgot my login/pass to saturn shack and i havent talked to x2f4u in quite a long time since he designed the site and layout.. all i did was post and add content
*shrugs*

Yeap, afaik Nights is 100% playable in this realease. Shining Force still crashes though (was playable in R5, or R4 or even R1 I think).
Story Of Thor 2 and Virtual On are also playable and looking great...
If you want more speed you can deactivate sound anytime :D
Edit: When a game crashes or freezes when it boots or loads it might be due to a "bad" ISO+MP3 image. Saturn is very sensitive to this matter. In any case try to convert the MP3s to WAVEs and burn the image (ISO+WAVE) to a CD.

Just woundering what settings are you using to getting 'Story of Thor 2' to work (Cd or Iso mounted on what program? Bios? Region settings, game region, etc...), 'cuz I have the NTSC/USA version of the game and no matter what bios or region setting I put it just loads to the bios, and the only game I could run is 'Dracula X' which is a Jap game, so I thought this emulator only runs Jap game but I geuss you proved me wrong.
Could you please help me?

From the options of the emulator set the Area Code to America or Europe and make sure that you choosed the correct Drive. If this doesn't help then tell me what message you get after the BIOS loads.

Okay I did that, it doesn't say anything.

This is not possible... If you can't run the game then the BIOS will show a message. Something like "drive open", "drive empty" or "disk unsuitable for this system"...

Unfortunatly, it seems that SSF has the same problem with PDS as the hacked girigiri did. In the battles where there is speech, it will sometimes "freeze" (aka, continue forever at the end of the speech, playing music and scrolling the background, etc, but you can't proceed).
I was all ready to play through it again finally too, this time hoping without having to redo battles 50 times, but oh well. Gotta pick up another real saturn sometime.
Since two emulators with completely different code/dev types have this problem, makes you wonder.

SSF 007 alpha R12 screenshots.
Consider that:
-using scanlines
-playable till the point of running (just tested them, don't know if it'll crash somewhere further, what I personally doubt ;) )
Batman Forever - The Arcade Game
Gfx glitches in the Start Menu and Player Select. After that, fully playable.

Guys, I felt so relieved last night when I FINALLY got my first Saturn game working (well, "working" may not be the right word"), on *Satourne 1.1p*: Shining Force 3. In addition, Nights into Dreams took me to character selection. Here are the screenshots.
I gotta say, though: this saturn emulator scene is still pretty shaky, isn't it? Some people apparently obtain satisfying, playable results - but not me!
SHINING FORCE 3:
here's the looooong-winded intro dialogue, which in addition is incomprehensible - and what's with the faces?: :yucky:
http://www.geocities.com/k2nsl3r/Screen01.JPG
Pad plugin (smpc 1.1) works fine, and I could walk around the palace, apparently in full speed, with some anti-aliasing visible:
http://www.geocities.com/k2nsl3r/Screen02.JPG
Here you see some of the more egregious graphical errors:
http://www.geocities.com/k2nsl3r/Screen03.JPG
... After going through one door, it just jammed. Well, the graphical glitches were numerous anyway... Maybe someone has an idea on how to improve on this, like is there an emulator that runs this?
...
NIGHTS - INTO DREAMS:
this was a short experience - here's the last image I saw as it froze:
http://www.geocities.com/k2nsl3r/Screen04.JPG
Overall, somewhat disappointing, but still pretty liberating, since I literally spent 3-4 continuous hours trying to get ANY game to work, on ANY emulator... Really quite a hassle. :ala:
...
My machine is AMD Athlon 3200+, with Radeon800GT. Speed really isn't an issue - more the basic emulation part!

Heh, good question mate. Actually I don't know if you can see the fps with SSF. But I can tell you that Bust a move is playable and Mortal Kombat 2 is slow (not so much slow, but hard to play).
I'll have a better look later, after work. :)

Some guy was arguing that Mario 64 had oh so crispy detailed graphics compared to the low resolution grainy Saturn 3d games, so I just had to make that pic - the guy most likely never even saw mario64 running on the real hardware because its blurry as fuck due to the forced antialiasing/mipmapping (whichever) of the n64. That pic is to illustrate the difference between the two.

Yeah I understand. I notice that. But very clever and funny, thought. ;)
JuGz
January 29th, 2006, 11:47
Well if you have to compare the details between Saturn and N64 you should take some more recent N64 game, not the very first one. ;) Some Rare games, for istance. ;)
Borisz
January 30th, 2006, 10:05
I know thats its not a good direct comparison but the guy specifically said something along the lines that no Saturn game can live up to Mario 64 because the Saturn is only capable of displaying grainy, pixelated graphics.

Well, it's a bios splash screen.

The V-Saturn was a clone of the Saturn, autorised by Sega.
JVC/Victor V-Saturn
Another authorized clone of Saturn. There are two versions of this system, both light-grey. The casing is similar to that of any standard Saturn. "V-Saturn" is printed on top of the machine.
RG-JX1: Model with oval buttons. Two toned gray with black as bottom second tone.
RG-JX2: Model with round buttons. Two toned gray with darker gray as bottom color. From inspecting the later version, it is identical in every way to the Sega machine aside from color and markings, to the point one can suspect both are made by the same people, or at minimum are made out of exactly the same parts (all the plastic moldings are identical etc.). The boot-up sequence on a V-Saturn has the polygons form a V-Saturn logo instead of the SegaSaturn logo, of course. The boot-up screen on the second one shows "Ver. 1.01" just as it does on white Saturns have been seen to do...

Hey Borisz,
First of all, great shots - thanks for sharing them!
Second - did your Saturn Bomberman shots come from SSF? I have both the E and J versions of this game, and can get both running on my actual Saturn machine, but when I try to play it on SSF (ver. 0.07 beta R2) I get an error. Can't tell you what the error is 'cause it's in Japanese :)
I've gotten plenty of other games to work, though - Sexy Parodius, Shining Force 3, Guardian Heroes, and even Radiant Silvergun (though this one runs a bit slow).
Do I need to download an older version of SSF?

Open the file named "default" under the "Message" directory with notepad and put "english" in the top row. That will change status messages to English. If its an actual ingame text, make a screenshots of it and I'll try translating it.
And ya, all screenshots there are from SSF but I thought that would be obvious enough from the URL and from the naming scheme of most pics.

Thanks Boriz,
I changed the error message to English, and here's what I get after I try booting up the ISO using Daemon tools. The SEGA screen comes up (like the game is booting properly) and then this:
Error
MasterSH2 code=e101
06033006:(E101) MOV H'01, R1
SlaveSH2 code = B0BE
20000200:(B0BE) BSR H'20000380
20000202:(277A) XOR R7,R7
68000 code=6714
000011A4:(6714) BEQ $000011BA
Unknown SMPC command:0A
Doesn't mean anything to me, but I'm sure it means something to you guys.
Like I said, I've gotten many games to work perfectly fine before this - Sexy Parodius, Cotton Boomerang, Shining Force 3, etc.
Thanks for any help!

here's what I get after I try booting up the ISO using Daemon tools.
That's the problem. It's most likely a busted copy of the game. Get the original and make a bin/cue dump of it.
d+pad
March 11th, 2006, 22:58
I've burned the iso/wavs to CD, though, and got that working on my modded Saturn - so doesn't that imply the dump is OK?
I'm not against getting an actual copy of the game, as it's cheap enough now, but don't want to do that if I already have a working copy.
Does that error mean anything to you?
Borisz
March 12th, 2006, 02:02
That kind of error frequently comes up when the emulator hits something that isnt emulated or shouldnt happen. As all Bomberman games ever released for the Saturn work fine on SSF, the problem lies within the iso/wav copy you have. The fact that you can burn it and play it means nothing.

Ok then - guess I'll be buying a copy on ebay! Thanks for the help.
Another random-ish question - should all of the Parodius games work on SSF? I get Sexy Parodius to work fine, but not having such luck with Jikkyou Oshybari Parodius.
Thanks again!

Thanks to you, too, Borisz - Sexy Parodius def. works (and looks beautiful - I'll try to post some shots soon) and it looks like Parodius Deluxe Pack works, too. Only problem I've encountered so far was a glitchy background in the 3rd level. I'm going to get an actual copy of the game and see if it's SSF that is causing the glitch or a busted ISO.
I've gotten Cotton Boomerang to work perfectly on the new SSF, and Twin Bee Deluxe Pack as well. Oh, and Magic Night Rayearth, too. Guess I'll have to stop typing soon and start sending screen shots :)
