Note: Cyberman, can you make this a sticky so everyone will find it??

This is or will be a General FAQ and How To Thread specifically directed at all those people who by some unnatural reason cannot work out how to use iDeaS. I will also add other things (like how to take Screenshots and Video Capture). If you have any silly questions or problems, post them here instead of filling up the iDeaS forum with what might be one reply answers. There are plenty of smart people around who I am sure can help those in need, but check this post in case I add any updates to it.

gio123,

No..it is still in the early development. Be patient for the next release or so. If you want it...buy NDS and give nintendo a support.

You should know better more than that. *GRIN*

Stickied, and I've been busy too. Go figure :D

Ahh well. With 300 + NDS games it could take a while to test all those on 1.0.8. Have fun, this reminds me of trying to get Koudelka working with ePSXe :D

okay, I got a problem.
for sometime I have been wanting to use a nds emulator, but I always seem to fail. I am using the newest version of ideas to play SM64 DS. When I run it it goes about 15-25 fps which im okay with, but when it passes the nintendo screen and starts to go into another part it crashes out of nowhere. >(
It is extremely frustrating cuz I thought that finally I could play an NDS game but then it just crashes when it goes into another screen. What am I doing wrong? (thanks for the help) =)

I don't think unfixing the fix is a very good idea, I mean it would be like taking several steps back down that ladder you are always trying to make your way to the top of. You don't go backwards in the process of improving upon something or that would be just plain stupid...I suppose that is why Evrain is regretting it so much (do you get it?).

no i meant locking the emu to not run it, and games like mariokart that are way to hyped

Evrain
March 24th, 2006, 21:43
Mariokart is a damn cool game, when played online. And I still suck at it, no matter what.
Yes, locking games directly via the emulator would be a good idea: I do want this project to be the top ranked among DS emulators, but at the same time I certainly don't want people to use it just to plaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay games for free. That's damn unnerving, and I've got way more important things to worry about (mainly because in real-life Trauma Center there isn't a save/load option, if you know what I mean) than letters from Nintendo.

Evrain, why are you so obsessed about people trying play commercial games on ideas? if you dont want people to play commercial nds games on your emulator why bother releasing it? i think you are a real kiljoy, do you see the creators of DSmume or project 64 acting like babies? complaining on forums all the time about people plaing copied games on emulators? no. because they like many other emulator creators, actually trust that 90% or so of the people who use the emulator are just either playing games they once owned and are trying to relive some classic games or, people like myself who are facinated by emulation and who do own the games/consoles but just like to see the work of geniuses who can emulate such complicated hardware on a pc. true there are a lot of people who just use emulators for piracy but, why should people like me, or thousands others have to suffer because of the minority of people who use emulators for the wrong reasons? does anyone agree with me?

RockmanForte
March 25th, 2006, 05:39
zion, stop it. you have no right. I wont agreed with you. Have a respect to him and his team, thats it.

March 25th, 2006, 09:00
There should be no argument here, because Evrain (and any other Emulator Related People) have every right to decide upon and refuse to do as requested. Think of it like this, for one they are risking the chance of being sued for pursuing copyrighted software, which I'm sure many have seen happen to those PSX emulators a way back. Plus they are not only spending their spare time to develop the programs, but also money is coming out of their pockets just so some noob can come along and whine to them because their programs don't play Mario Kart DS or Super Mario 64 DS. It's just not fair on them that even with all the stuff they have to put up with as it is that they also have to withstand the jabbering that people with no understanding of what happens behind the curtains of emulation.

If Evrain (in your words) "acts like a baby" it might be because he's being pestered again. I would honestly go mental if I opened my inbox (or jumped onto a forum) and found 101 replies telling me my work is crap and I should do this and do that. Wouldn't you?

What I would suggest, is that you (zion) try being responsible for something with high demand, this does not even have to have anything to do with emulation or computers at that matter. The point is the common nature of people can be quite irritating especially if they are not pleased with something.

For instance, I was at the shops today and I joined the line at the counter to pay for my stationary. It just so happened to be about the time when most people were shopping and the lines were almost going into the isles they were that long. And some poor soul had the job to work at the counter, scanning things in, acting friendly to the customers and working with the register. Now I was in no rush and I am very good at being patient (normally). But the people around me were heated up (and the shop was air-conditioned), you could hear them mutter mean things under their breath and they continually stare at the clock and then give the counter person a mean look.
Could you imagine the kind of stress that person would have? (I'll also point out I've haven't done any part-time yet cos I haven't the need to)
Why even my friends tell me they get these people who have no right in their part to mouth off and whine to them because one slight hair is out of place or something is not to their expectations.

Now you could argue this has nothing to do with Evrain or computers at all, but I think it is a very clear example of what it would be like in his shoes. I mean obviously you would not have people shouting in your face in person, but there would always be those irritating people who just don't know when to butt out.

Oh and another thing...I doubt a handful of people (though I could be wrong) who know about emulation could even program for themselves, so how do they know what to think when an author gets mad/annoyed by their noobing?? If people didn't take things so much for granted, I bet people would be a little nicer...

"rockmangames" who are you to say i have no right?? it's a free country isn't it? i thought that was the whole point of emutalk, so people can voice there opinions? i do have respect for evrain and especially lino but, as i said above i just dont like evrains attitude.

zion, do not take me wrong. I liked you and I am sure you are nice person and yeah, it is a free country but if they do not want to do this then you should not say anything to him and his team because they make their decision and they will release this emulator to be fully playable in the future but I guess they are doing it for a purpose of development interesting and they are not doing it to play commercial roms for free.

Evrain
March 25th, 2006, 19:06
Okay, something here isn't clear enough. I began being interested in emulation when some random friend gave me a diskette with an unknown GBC emulator for Pokémon. I later learned to modify it to make other dumps run in its place and from that on, it all went downhill to Nemu64, Project64 (with Evangelion64, and my first ban at smiff's hands).
Whenever I decide to use part of my free time to boot up my system and suft the Net, I prefer doing something active, which leads me to learning new stuff, and that's why I got involved in a number of things, which include programming and emulation itself.
Now, this said, I am no less noob or lamer than anyone else: I own ROMs without their physical counterpart (but I did buy a Nintendo DS and my fav cartridges), I use Chankast and PCSX2 to get some good shmup action -Ikaruga, Border Down, Ibara, bloody Mushihime-sama and other random stuff I can't recall now- and so on. But a lesson I learned is to know the real boundaries of this hobby before complaining: I am also a patient and kind person, but when someone insults me with a "I never owned a console, NEVER, I crack games and play for free, now shuddup and emulate that fscking MariokartDS... well, as LL and Rockman said, even someone like me gets pissed off.

I am not accusing anyone, but it seems to me that someone has misunderstood iDeaS' aim, which is full DS emulation as of NDSlib specs. Commercial games are a pleasant "side effect", but as R. Belmont -one of MAME's main coders- said once, "I'd rip the entire Neogeo driver out [of MAME]. Do not try to impose your tastes on us and we'll return the favor". In other words, what we (I) despise is the childish behavior of said noobs, who can only whine about a way to play for free.

That said, I'll add (although I shouldn't) some WIP news: transparencies are now beginning to get correctly shown on iDeaS, that means improved Phoenix Wright, improved Castlevania (I wasn't really keen on seeing a Golem teleporting in front of me...), improved Trauma Center and random stuff I can't recall right now. I also intend to contact YopYop, and see if the DesMuMe project can still somehow be kept alive, either by offering him host outside the (stupid IMHO) french DRM law or by fusing its result within iDeaS core. And the results would be quite... interesting.
Finally, we are putting up some skeleton driver for savegames.

as far as i know...there are no requirements or anything to run it (apart from a Windows OS) and i don't think there has been any ACTUAL testing as to see whether there is a minimum system requirement (as in RAM etc) as to which the quality/speed will drop or be less than normal nor is there any like i suppose STANDARD either....though again I could be wrong...

Your best bet is to just try and get hold of whatever hardware you can and go from there...but I mean i just have the plain old standard computer packages that sell for around $700-900 AUS and they can run N64 games at pretty much as well as the emulators can handle (except for special effects and/or high system requirement games, though Goldeneye 007 works fine)

Does any of that help???

i wish you luck too!! but you should also realise that you are gonna need to study the console and how it is coded as well if you are gonna try emulating one...And I have been told that some of the consoles (especially the newer generations) are quite complex and it would not only take a very good programmer but also someone who can work with both to make one....but my fingers are crossed and maybe in a couple of years you'll be good at it!!!!

Well the idea with it is that in order the there to be a brilliantly crafted console (my example Nintendo X) you would have to have some negative equivalency to balnce out the equation....ie have a hack-proof system making it harder for emu authors lol

I have made the entire compatibility list for iDeaS but I posted in another forum and since advertizing is forbidden, I won't provide the link.

I confirm that after #571, no rom works. Actually in my tests, the last rom that partially worked was 0554 - Mini RC Rally (U) and the last that seems fully functional was 0516 - Top Gun (E).

RockmanForte
October 19th, 2006, 16:42
Unfortunately, I already test all games for iDeaS and it is now discontinued because it's dead in the water and most games are in black screens ..over 320 roms which recently of this year are in black screens. It's worthless for now.

What you talked about is:

0554 - Mini RC Rally (U) - Could not erase data. Turn the power off and reinsert
the Game Card.

0516 - Top Gun (E) - ingame then won't go anywhere.

Ody
October 20th, 2006, 02:59
Yes it's something like that. I didn't specified all the issues I encountered. For Top Gun, I played for a few minutes and the game passed the start creen so that I suposed it is likely to run more. Maybe I should have waited a little more. For partially worked, I mean opposed to black sceen.

However there are still some games that work at least after a few minutes after #320:

0320 - Super Monkey Ball - Touch & Roll (E)
0322 - Frogger Helmet Chaos (E)
0326 - Touch Dictionary (K)
0329 - Top Gun (J)
0330 - Sangokushi (J)
0333 - Super Monkey Ball - Touch and Roll (U)
0334 - Itsu Demo Doko Demo Dekiru Igo (J)
0335 - Itsu Demo Doko Demo Dekiru Shogi (J)
0346 - Tengai Makyou II Manjimaru (J)
0351 - Ping Pals (F)
0352 - Bust-A-Move DS (E)
0358 - Shamu's Deep Sea Adventures (E)
0359 - Garaku Tale (J)
0369 - Tao's Adventure - Curse of the Demon Seal (U)
0370 - Madagascar (F)
0373 - Super Black Bass Fishing (U)
0381 - Madagascar (J)
0391 - Resident Evil - Deadly Silence (E)
0395 - Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney (E)
0410 - Tsubasa Chronicle Vol. 2 (J)
0424 - Nobunaga no Yabou DS (J)
0433 - Top Gun (U)
0439 - Golden Nugget Casino DS (E)
0445 - Tao's Adventure - Curse of the Demon Seal (E)
0451 - Daisenryaku DS - Great Strategy (J)
0454 - Dragon Booster (E)
0461 - Magnetica (U)
0470 - Magical Vacation - 5-tsu no Hoshi Ganarabutoki (J)
0473 - Break 'Em All (U)
0478 - Finding Nemo Touch de Nemo (J)
0489 - Milon no Hoshizora Shabon - Puzzle Kumikyoku (J)
0496 - Touch Dictionary (K)
0516 - Top Gun (E)

Once again they seems to be fully functional since I tested all the roms in 3 days and hadn't the time to verify exactly.
+ a bunch of games that loaded but can't pass the start sreen.

Anyway, I agree that iDeaS is quite dead: no update since March...

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood :(
Anyway, if there is no further update, this emulator is just going to die, so sad considering its potential...

Hei guys, i'm new to the forum and I'm trying to get Final Fantasy III to work, but every time I start iDeaS I get an "unable to read" mensage, and when I try to emulate the game I get:
"Unable to access Backup Memory.
Please try again after turning your system
OFF and reinserting the DS card"

could anyone lend me a hand here please?

iDeaS is great emu but no$gba is the best at the moment because it's emulating alots of games nearly perfectly and some 100% fully playable games. iDeaS is, to my opinion, the best emulator than desmume emulator right now.

No$gba -- 1st
iDeaS -- 2nd
Desmume -- 3rd
NeonDS -- 4th (It could be 3rd place at any time soon, watch out!)
